Then, we add them to our playlists in hopes of enjoying them day in and day out. Not often do we sit back and really think as to why they influence us so much. One of my favorite songs is titled “Clean” by Natalie Grant. This song describes how Jesus takes our brokenness and sin and washes us completely clean. “We’re told these days that the hottest and fastest wire into memory is our sense of smell, but music must run a close second. Some songs carry us into a certain mood, some to a general region of our past lives, and some to a very particular moment and situation in time,” states Stephen Corey in A Voice for the Lonely. I cannot think of a time in my life where music hasn’t been there because I use music in times of trouble and in times of joy. It is in the background of every memory I have.…

This section in particular is sung with a great sense of urgency which conveys a sense of importance from Joseph. Joseph crafts this sense of urgency through the speed and staccato of his delivery. In addition, the urgent vocals combined with the poignant words produce a sense of sincerity and need to both Joseph and the audience. The personal yet bold lyrics drop the figurative language used in other parts of the song such as, “My skin will scream reminding me of/ Who I killed inside my dream.”…

Most who witnessed the sitting president of these United States, sing the spiritual hymn Amazing Grace at Mother Emanuel AME church in Charleston, SC, during his eulogy of falling spiritual warrior Rev. Clemmenta Picknecly would probably agree that it was overwhelming. It appeared to stir a feeling of connectively to all who sang along. Including, it is surmised, those around the world that identified with the words, reason and necessity for such a song at that moment in time. How ironic to sing a song, which was penned by a former white slaveholder, who turned abolitionist. And sing it in the state that was the lynchpin of the civil war.…

Music has been a part of people’s everyday lives for so long. It even evolved in a lot of different ways, then again, not everyone knows how much it actually affects the human mind and body. It doesn’t just make us sing along when we hear some of our favorite songs, it doesn’t just make us dance and groove, but it also has amazing scientific and medical effects. According to neuroscientist and author of This Is Your Brain on Music, Dr. Daniel J.
