Collaborative Learning Community (CLC): Theoretical Frameworks I
Over the years, numerous therapeutic approaches have been developed in order to improve the lives of those who suffer with mental illness and disorders. These techniques can also be applied as short or long term forms of therapy. Some of these techniques have the capability to be tested and scientifically proven; others, not so. Neukrug used the Empty Chair Technique. “Empty-chair dialogue, derived from Gestalt therapy (Perls, Hefferline, & Goodman, 1951), is a method that facilitates the emotional processing of unresolved bad feelings toward significant others” (Greenburg & Malcom, 2002). Jill had to pretend as if her mother was present and interact through dialogue in order to uncover underlying issues and feelings as a way to find closure and relief. This helped Jill identify that closure was not the underlying issue; it was the time and memories missed that weighed so heavily on her. In both sessions it appeared that each client had a difficult moment with the therapist’s request. Yet, both clients were able to receive a resolution to each one of their issues. As a group, we came to the agreement that Dr. Neukrug had a better approach to the client’s need. In only one session, Dr. Neukrug was able to have the client acknowledge the essence of her issue; the problem that kept her from progressing. It was here where the client came to a realization that her emotions were not misguided. It was one emotion that held her back from forgiving her mother and herself. She was hurt! As a professional in the field, Dr. Neukrug led the client to focus her weakness and her attention to this one area in her life that prevented her from being free. While Dr. Davis’ approached her client’s need differently, the results were not as prompt as they were with Dr.
