Everybody has heard of paper maché, but not everyone knows of the much more useful alternative, paper maché clay. It’s simple to use, and easy to fill a space. It is much better than normal paper maché clay, even if it has it’s flaws. The benefits far outweigh the flaws, making it an extremely useful tool in making masks. Masks can be made from all kinds of material, but using paper maché clay is the easiest way to have the most artistic freedom. Paper maché clay can be messy, but so can paper maché. Once you get a good ratio of solution and water, you can immediately use it. All you have to do is take some and put it into where you want it. When making a mask out of it, you should probably have a base for it. A good starter base is aluminum foil. Paper maché clay isn’t very heavy, so it’s pretty good for keeping a light, big mask. Since the natural texture of paper maché clay is pretty bumpy, it can look almost like concrete or cream of wheat. If you want a smooth surface, then you could do one of two things with paper maché clay. The first, is to wait until it dries, then try using sandpaper to make it smooth by chipping away some of the bumps. The second way, is to make it as smooth as you can when it’s wet, and wait until it dries. Once it’s dry you can use regular paper maché on top of it. That will help it look smooth, and may also give the possibility of making really vibrant shapes. Moreover, if you are making a non-human mask, the combo of the two paper machés open up even more
