Clay Jensen Analysis

Improved Essays
Clay Jensen is significant to the novel because he is the protagonist. Clay receives the tapes on his doorstep and listens to the tapes throughout the story. The story revolves around him listening and knowing the truth of what happened to Hannah. Clay goes around the city listening to the tapes, feeling many emotions from Hannah’s words and how he could have saved her, but did not. Clay is the ninth person on the tapes but is on the tapes for a different reason compared to the reasons why the other 12 people are on the tapes. Clay did not do anything wrong to Hannah as Hannah added Clay to the tapes to apologize. “Which explains my overreaction, Clay. And that’s why you’ll get these tapes. To explain. To say I’m sorry.” (pg.206) Therefore,

There is declining participation in local elections because of many reasons such as, voter apathy, a dislike of the candidates, work conflicts, the feeling that their vote doesn’t count, and a lack of knowledge about the candidates. In “Voter Turnout Plummeting in Local Elections” Aaron Weinschenk suggests the reason for lower voter turnout in local elections is due to “the negativity surrounding government in general is seeping into local government” and “polluting politics at all levels” (para. 4). According to Governing State and Localities “For municipal elections, turnout rates are generally less than 20 percent” (121). That means that only about one-fifth of the local population is casting a vote.…

    Andrew O Hagen Analysis

The quote ”A good nationalism has to depend on a principle of the common people, on the myths of a struggling commonality”express the fact that a nation is built on the coming together of common citizens as well as establishing a feeling of struggling. This feeling creates an environment where our society feels it must work hard to keep the nation together. Andrew O’Hagen has taken the reality of different nations in our world and has put them into one sentence. Andrew O'Hagen's view is one of that may be controversial due to the fact that it completely embraces the ideological factor of nationalism where a nation is defined under specific rules and not defined by the diversity of the citizens. A nation under his perspective may be considered more of an ethnic nation which is a nation where there is one common culture, race and religion compared to a civic nation where there a combination of cultures, races and religions.…

How Teju Cole describes the pictures and the situations in each picture, it is almost like a story for each description. I enjoyed reading the descriptions instead of just having a picture to look at. It forced me to use my imagination in the same way as reading a novel verse a picture book. As for what it means to me, it means that people do not wish to be labeled by their past. A lot of the pictures were of people in jail and many of the people most likely did not wish to be labeled a criminal or a how they were in the past.…

General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was in many respects second to General Robert E. Lee in the Confederate popularity with southerners, especially within their memory, religion, and mythology. His early death on May 10, 1863 left many unanswered questions, however former soldiers on his staff, contemporary historians, and modern professional historians have filled in the gaps about Jackson to complete a history of the general. His history has been connected to the Confederacy, Lee, Shenandoah Valley, and the myths of the Lost Cause. Over one-hundred fifty years have passed since his death, yet Stonewall Jackson remains as popular as ever amongst those familiar with the Civil War as evidenced by the many biographies written about him. Wallace…

The Oklahoma City bombing appeared to be their source of inspiration with them journaling that they wanted to do something that not only rivaled but outlived this horrific incident as they planned their gory presentation for its anniversary (Haider-Market & Joslyn, 2001). Klebold even took the time to boast on video about exacting "the most deaths in U.S. history" (Larkin, 2007). Columbine was envisioned not chiefly as a shooting, but as a bombing on a substantial level. After the bombs were to have gone off, they prearranged to gun down escaping survivors. With the wiring being faulty and incorrect for the most part, the bombs did not go off as intended.…

Seeing even the most disciplined and non-violent form of protest as an intolerable affront against long-established modes of racial contact, Lawson’s dismissal from Vanderbilt, was a strategy that whites time and again applied in an effort to keep the social order as it was. Lawson, as others before him was constructed as an outsider who came to Nashville to instigate an otherwise content black populace. Owing to the fact that few of the earlier protesters had a discernible political agenda, their actions have often been simplistically subsumed under the frame of assimilationist activism aiming to liberate the black middle-classes from the burden of racial stigma, while leaving the problems of the lower classes largely unaddressed. However,…
