Claude Monet, a french painter, painted the Church at Varengeville, Grey Weather, in the year 1882, in the midst of his artistic career. Varengeville-sur-Mer is a small commune in the Seine-Maritime of the north-western region in France. The painting is oil paint on a modest sized canvas about 25 by 32 inches. This oil landscape hangs directly on the wall, at a horizontal orientation, and is in a simple ornate frame. Monet’s painting is currently located at the Speed Art Museum, in Louisville, KY. In the upper left corner of the painting, sits a small Mariners’ church, where the hazy sky peaks out and radiates light from being the building. The church is a mixture of purple, blue and gray pigments with bright greens and mauves providing some highlights. To the right of the church there is a body of water, The English Channel, with several small triangular shapes, that appear to be sail boats. Despite the fact that there are not people directly in the painting, the boats represent the presence of humans and their involvement with nature. The foreground shows two very dark trees with their leaves blowing in the wind. The trees are emerging from the …show more content…
Instead of changing the subject matter in each painting, he would only slightly changing the lighting and the way the view saw it. He painted over five different paintings including the Church at Varengeville. In a smaller series, he painted three versions of the scene, changing the time of day and atmospheric conditions, thus changing the coloration and lighting in each. Monet recreated the church in a different light, at a different moment in time. He was concerned with the optical effects of light and conveying the passage of time and the ephemeral moment. Although each painting is the same church, they all depict different emotions and have different feelings. A painting of a church at noon on a sunny day will have a very different effect than a church at on a gloomy

Though a rather uncreative title, Coming out of Church lacks nothing in interest visually. The painting, done by Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta, was created some time before 1875 in Spain reveals the harsh class differences and cultural norms of the mid 1800’s while also revealing the artists own personal outlook on these phenomena. Madrazo cultivates a scene of gloomy metaphor in his use of rain, and a visual representation of his opnion on the class division through the use of gesture, costume, subject, juxtaposition and light. The end product is both a beautifully crafted piece of work, and a painting that reflects Madrazo’s critique on his belief in the dangers and ailments of class division. Location, location, location; not just important in real estate, it is also prevalent in the location of the scene in a painting.…

Mary Cassatt’s Child Picking a Fruit, painted in 1893, shows an intimate moment between a mother and child. Immediately after seeing this painting you can feel the loving connection between the subjects. A green background supports a mother in a pink dress holding what can be assumed as her nude baby son. The pair stand under the branches of an apple tree. The child is reaching for the fruit as the mother holds down the branch to help.…

This Piece by Melissa Miller, The Arch 1986, draws you in with its extensive energy. The rush strokes of used with the oil paint enforce a chaotic energy within each individual creature. You are immediately pulled in by the left top corner where the light breaks through the clouds and mystic darkness. The contrast in the sky with warm and cool colors is my overall memorable touch to it. It’s great size allows you to almost be a part of it.…

To think that I would have a completely different way of thinking about my daily activities from research of a painting of “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Heironymus Bosch, this painting is a part of our first year read book that is brought up on many occasions by Frans Dee Waal who relates it back to the Bonobos. This painting required much time looking at and much research. To me this painting has made me come to think so much about temptations that we fight in our life, to me as a college student there’s so many temptations that I fight everyday, They are displayed in the painting through fruits there is a bramble bush that grows black berries, a pelican feeding its young, men holding fruit with a stroke’s head, they represent that temptations are all around us, they can consume us and they will make us weak. To give some background on the painting, the painting is a triptych, which were made for religious purpose and placed on a alter in the churches, but if you when you are to look at this painting you don’t see that…

He is able to show the emotions of all those in the painting, without using words to express the felling. With the man who is pushing the boat the reader can see how this man is using all of his strength to push the boat, and the difficulty of keeping this boat on track. Also the boat is more of a clean cut, with smooth lines. It conveys the smooth journey that the passengers enjoys, compared to the sea. The artist uses dark colors and the current of the sea is violent, with limbs randomly popping out of the sea.…

My personal initial thought was, why did a Caucasian male paint this? What significance does this pertain to him? Maybe he was just a racist dude and was a slave owner a painted a moment in which one of his slave tried to escape, I don’t know for sure and others don’t. Only he does. Aside from that, in the artwork, it is easily shown that there is an African-American male that is hiding up in the trees, purposely hiding from what looks like a group of men along with a dog and someone riding horseback.…

Claude Monet and Paul Cezanne differed greatly in style and did not present a clear, concise picture of the world, but they both found new ways of representing nature. The paintings "Rocks in the Forest" and "The Artist's Garden at Giverny" represent the artist's lives by their use of different shades of colors; however, they share rough, unfinished textures and both vertical and curved lines. " Rocks in the Forest" render the shapes with passages of subtly varied colors, such as green, blue, and purple tints with an accent of golden sunlight. One of the similarities between these two paintings are the rough, unfinished textures.…
