Mao closed all of China’s schools and encouraged the Red Guards to attack all “traditional values” and to test party officials by publicly criticizing them. Millions of students stormed through cities and towns, harassing and often physically attacking officials, intellectuals, teachers, and others thought to be not fully committed to revolutionary values. Large numbers of these people died. The resulting terror and chaos completely disrupted city life as well as urban industries, and China’s economy suffered greatly.…

Trial Of the Wicked Witch, written by Craig Sodaro and directed by Jane Purdy, focuses on the trial of the recognizable character of the Wicked Witch. The main twist of this play is that it breaks the fourth wall, a conceptual wall that serves as a barrier between a play and its audience, by allowing the audience to determine the outcome of the trial. The major theme of the play is that all people are innocent until proven guilty. This theme is expressed through a court case that enables the Wicked Witch to defend herself against the accusations being put forth. The main conflict is proving whether or not the Wicked Witch committed any crimes through the court case.…

Curt Lemon dies in Vietnam as “he took a peculiar half step, moving from shade into bright sunlight, and the booby-trapped 105 round blew him into a tree”- there’s no other reason why he dies, there’s no message to glean (O’Brien 79). According to the “How to Tell a True War Story” chapter of Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, a true war story is amoral, sickening, beautiful, and seemingly infinite. “The Soldier” by Rupert Brooke claims to be a war story, despite failing to reach most of O’Brien’s qualifiers. However, its companion piece, “The Mother” by May Herschel-Clark, comes much closer to fitting O’Brien’s definitions, but ultimately still falls short. Immediately, Brooke’s “The Soldier” has no dark or sickening tones, nothing…

Out of all the concepts in the world, love and morality are the hardest to explain and understand, yet time and time again, authors try to tackle both concepts. The first story that attempts and succeeds in bringing out these perceptions is by a woman named Josephine Niggli. The main reason why she writes many stories based in Mexico such as “The Street of the Cañon” is because her family came from Mexico during the Mexican civil war. In the story, a man and a girl are at a party when the man, named Pepe Gonzalez, tries to woo the girl named Sarita Calderón to unite their two towns after he broke them apart. Another author that tackles the same concepts in a different way is Alfred Noyes, an Englishman who wrote the next story based in…
