Classroom Reflection

Teachers should always be evaluating their practices to become a better teacher. There should not be a single teacher who does the same exact lesson every year. As time changes and as students change, the lessons should reflect that. In order to know what I need to teach I look at the SOL and unpack each standard. I base my lessons and my assessments off of the SOLs. It is very important to have the foundational knowledge to teach students. If a teacher does not know basic facts, they could be a detriment to their students or they could provide them with incorrect information. I looked into the curriculum to see what Newport News had provided and based off of the SOL information and the curriculum, I was able to plan my unit, using the different …show more content…
It is essential that each lesson has all the necessary learning components. I love creating new things for the students to complete and as a teacher, we are always creating something for help our students improve in their learning. As far as my timing and pacing goes, I use the Newport News pacing guide and look at what my students can accomplish. There have been times where I thought a lesson would go by really fast but actually went very slow. We must be flexible and give the students time to comprehend the lesson. One thing I would like to improve on, is how to better differentiate instruction. While it is easier, when you are looking at the students, it is harder to write it on paper. A way to improve this is to have multiple plans for the same concept and use which plan you might think works best. Not all plans are going to work. This is why it is necessary to have multiple back-up plans. When we have multiple plans, it is also easier to pick and choose pieces, if need be. My students know and understand that I hold them to high expectations. All of my students meet my expectations and when they do not, they are reminded. It is important to give these expectations and for children to rise to …show more content…
For my first year in the classroom, one of my goals is to find a behavior system that I will be able to use throughout the whole year. To go along with the behavior system, I want to improve the routines and procedures. I always have them in place, but do not always follow them. It is imperative to follow these consistently because if a teacher does not, then the students could believe they do not have to. If the students do not follow the rules and routines, the teacher could lose control of the class and it will take a long time to get the class back under control. To achieve these goals, I plan to continue to remind students of the rules, routines, and procedures. I will also have them posted throughout the year and will review them

The first days of school are the most crucial in implementing procedures and routines. For example, when a visitor walks into my room the students know to show “peace and quiet”. Also, to get my student’s attention I say, “Show Me Hands and Eyes” and they follow by repeating “Hands and Eyes”. This is a great way to get them focused quickly during instruction. Every child in my classroom has a job.…

Effective teachers can establish a well-managed classroom and empower students through the evidence-based practices of positive behavior support using scientific and artistic methods. Such evidence-based classroom practices as compiled in the Effective Classroom PBS Plan include creating a classroom community, maximizing structure and predictability, posting and teaching expectations, and using a continuum of strategies to acknowledge appropriate or inappropriate behavior some of which may be proactive or reactive. Teachers who are not empowering the students are likely engaged in practices that are ineffective resulting in the opposite effect of disempowerment. Professional practices should be frequently evaluated to determine if actions…

Doing clinical observations are very important because it gives a change to see student and teacher interactions first hand and get to see how well a student is responding. During my observations at Biddeford Intermediate School, I got the change to shadow an Ed. Teach in a life skills room. This was a great opportunity for me because it was a chance to see another kind of intervention done in the special education department. I have done many observations with an occupational therapist, and they have always been in lighting and very educational, but to visit a life skills room gave me more perspective on the special education department as a whole.…

In the classroom at Denton City County Day school that I observed in, there is a wall that has the days of the week, a calendar with the current month and shapes drawn out and spelled out. All of these things are in big letters where the children can easily see them. The classroom teachers are providing a word wall that is enhancing their literacy abilities. According to Isenberg and Durham (2015), a word wall displays frequently used words related to a topic of study or has a meaning full purpose and contains either new or familiar words for the children to use. The word wall provides the children with a literacy-rich environment because it is used and taught to them daily.…

Most teachers know and accept their aren’t enough hours in the day to teach everything they want to and the students need to know. Trainer recommends reviewing the curriculum before the school session begins and sorting the lessons into three categories. The lessons that cannot be skipped, the lessons that could be skipped without much problem at the next level, and the lessons that are not too important at all. After sorting through the curriculum it is much easier to set a pace for your teaching style. This ensures the students get the best of what the need for the next grade.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…
