In the video, each of the teachers use a variety of strategies that lead to successful and well-managed inquiry. Their approaches encourage communication, community, organization, understanding, and inquiry. One approach I really appreciate from Ms. M’s classroom is how she reminds her students of the class rules they have established. She informs students to take turns, respect what each other says, there is no laughing, and that every idea is important. This is an important part of Phase B: Pre-Activity Teacher/Student Activities in the text and how it is important to establish rules, working directions, and cooperative group behavior that is fair and courteous (p.131). Rules, expected behaviors, and respect for each other should be practiced and maintained everyday to allow for constructive criticism and positive cooperation.
I admire how Mr. O states that his classroom is made of 23 teachers and 23 students. He makes it clear that he does not know all the answers, probes questions in group discussion, and learns along with his students. He really focuses on giving students the opportunity to exercise skills before they get out into the real world. Students in Mr. O’s classroom focus on past experiences when explaining what they think the mystery plant is and why. This approach relates to how introductory activities should be designed;

C’s classroom and lesson on worms. Using their own inquiry, they conducted experiments, collected date, and developed their own questions and conclusions simply by “messing around”. This is an example of open inquiry activities in the text (p. 120), where the teacher may provide the problem and materials for the students but gives them the time and freedom to explore on their own. The video also articulates the importance of students having a sense of ownership, feeling valued and part of a team, which leads to them feeling invested in their learning
