My Observation Of Ms. Pickle's Classroom

I had the privilege of spending an afternoon at Ensworth Academy and observe the lower school art classes this September. Ensworth is a private K-12 school in the Belle Meade area of Nashville, with campus split amongst two properties. Lower and Middle School reside on one plot of land, while the Upper School is closer to a main road. The afternoon I spent with one of the four art teachers, Ms. Pickle, allowed me insight into how to effectively manage a first grade class with minimal madness. Ms. Pickle’s classroom is one that every forthcoming teacher envisions will someday be theirs. Surrounded by floor to ceiling windows, ample storage space, new and ample supplies of materials it is a utopia. She has her students sit at tables of three to six, which allows for interaction between the students as they create. On the floor in front …show more content…
As I walked around the classroom asking questions learning about each student they were a shy and cautious group. Not wanting to become to loud because they didn’t want to upset Ms. Pickle and the expectations she had for a serene productive classroom. This situation again is ideal, it also is most likely a skill and approach to teaching Ms. Pickle has perfected during her thirty plus years of teaching at Ensworth. She commands respect, not through fear or intimidation; yet, through her calming presence that invites each of her students to fully engage in the art making process. As I entered into Mrs. Cindy Rodgers classroom, I felt the fear come back, I do not think I can work with students of this age. 3rd-grade students, I felt lost and out of place. 22 students, around 9 years of age, just don’t seem to be my forte. But on the other note, this class definitely surprised me. With 14 girls and only 8 boys, the class was sat up on a totally different way than I have ever seen a class.…

I arrived at Easton School District’s Forks Elementary School at around 8:45 a.m. that morning, a few minutes before the children were let in for class, to observe a 4th grade classroom. The instructor for the class, Mrs. Powell met with me in the main office to walk me down to her classroom. The first thing I saw when walking into the classroom was all of the different learning tools around the room, Mrs. Powell's use of both chalkboards for different objectives was just one, along with open reading areas. The classroom was set up into different 4 person groups, in which the students were able to work together and collaborate. When I was getting settled into the classroom around 9:00 a.m., the students began to arrive officially starting…

Classroom Setting One of the first things I noticed when walking into Mrs. Curl’s classroom was how pleasant a place it was. Not only was it clean, neat, organized, and colorful, but it also possessed a fun, child-friendly element that made it look like a place any kid would enjoy spending long periods of time in. Mrs. Curl would play music softly in the background at the beginning of her class when the children were doing educational busy-word to keep them occupied until everyone arrived and she was ready to begin the lessons. This improved the atmosphere tremendously as the music was, at times, soothing and at other times fun, kid-friendly tunes that got the kids excited and happy.…

Art has its own form of educational value and students develop better interaction skills with their peers and the public. Being able to develop a bond with peers with their same interest’s help students open up and become less shy thus helping them build a more sophisticated way of thinking.…
