To begin with, in this journal I will be be discussing my observations referring to diversity made at Indian Mounds Elementary while volunteering. First of all, I am in a preschool class of fourteen students. The teacher, is well organized and always has a set schedule. He also does a great job promoting diversity as well as helping the children learn. My main focus in this observation was the eight aspects of diversity. The first one is Cultural which according to the textbook is social values, cognitive codes, behavioral standards worldviews, and beliefs that characterize a group of people. Culture has three characteristics that I found useful while observing my classroom. First culture is learned, next is culture is shared and lastly culture is adaptive since it changes overtime. For instance, my second week volunteering I witnessed the teacher get concerned about a student who already struggles academically because he didn’t have a backpack and he had already spoken to his dad but still no backpack. This child also gets picked up by his dad everyday and is basically raised by him. When I heard this it all made more sense to me. Now I understand the child better and I can offer better help. The fourth area of diversity is religion. Religion is a big deal because it has a big influence on the children 's behavior. It 's also important for teachers to create an environment that makes every religion feel welcomed and accepted. Since my classroom is very diverse I know there are many different religions. No religion is ever favored in the class and the teacher makes everyone feel equal. I think that 's what matters the most. For example, Halloween is being called the “fall festival” and the teacher made it clear to the children that they don’t have to dress up. Socioeconomic status is next and it refers to how much money a family makes. Having a low economic status actually can affect a child’s
