Classroom Observation

Doing clinical observations are very important because it gives a change to see student and teacher interactions first hand and get to see how well a student is responding. During my observations at Biddeford Intermediate School, I got the change to shadow an Ed. Teach in a life skills room. This was a great opportunity for me because it was a chance to see another kind of intervention done in the special education department. I have done many observations with an occupational therapist, and they have always been in lighting and very educational, but to visit a life skills room gave me more perspective on the special education department as a whole. The environment in a life skills classroom is very different than the typical education classroom. The life skills classroom designed to teach students life skills to thrive in the world beyond the classroom. This is typically for special ed. students and students who could not survive in typical classrooms. The skills taught in this classroom are flexibility, social skills, productivity, and leadership, and activities of daily living. The classroom is also set up very different than the normal classroom and is furnished with the equipment to be able to learn activities of daily living. While I was in the life skills room I met a student with Down syndrome named Tommy. I observed Tommy closely the …show more content…
The first thing I noticed when walking into the classroom was how it was set up. Because it was a life skills room, it was set up in a very unique way. There was a full kitchen, a apartment like ear with a bed, a play area, and typical classroom set up with tables and desks, and a circle table used for group discussions. While the students are in this classroom they are learning life skills and the teachers were very hands on with the kids and very engaging. The classroom also had student work all around the room and bright posters hung up on the

Recently I did my observation at Chime Institute 's Schwarzenegger Community School in a first-grade class that consisted of about twenty students both those of who have disabilities and do not. These students are typically six years old and at the time there was one teacher and one assistant who led the class. In the classroom, there was also one paraprofessional for the student with special needs. The mother of the child was also there guiding her daughter and helping with any questions the paraprofessional had regarding her daughter 's needs. For the majority of my observation, I was in a class setting…

When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

When I tell people that I spend my study halls in the coffee shop they look at me oddly or ask me, “why?” and it is one of the reasons that I continue to spend my free periods there. The Arrowhead Coffee Shop provides learning opportunity for special education students to gain experience as well as employability and academic skills. They are given different tasks such as taking orders, making drinks, and cleaning; however, a number of them come in there just to relax as well. Spending my time in there has allowed me to gain special bonds with several of the students.…

Mrs. Gray allowed for me to join Ms. Youngberg’s second period comprehensive live skills class to interact with different special education students to get a sense of all many types of special education students there are. Ms. Youngberg taught a class full of different students-both in seven and eight grade- that are working at their own pace and on different subjects such as math and reading. Ms. Youngberg also has several student aids in her classroom so her students have someone to interact with and to ask for help when needed. As I walk into the classroom the students become very shy and wonder who I am.…

I conducted my special education based observation on March 10th at Murphy Junior High school. I had contacted Mr. Kenneth Kiefert ahead of time through email and met him at the school at around 10 that morning. Since the class he taught wasn’t until 10:25, he offered to show me around the school since I had never been there before and it was a fairly new school. Once he showed me around a bit we went to his classroom and discussed what the class he taught was and the specifics of it. He explained that the class was a 4th period math class but with a team taught approach.…

While at my observation this morning, the teacher would step in and help children when they were fighting for a toy, or when one of the children turned off the computer while he was playing, and he did not know how to turn it back on to keep doing this painting game. 2. Looking around, I see twelve desks with only half as many students sitting at them. Going into this clinical experience, I expected fewer students than in a typical class as I was assigned to a special education classroom. Students in Ms. Olson’s classroom had IEPs, mainly for having one or more behavioral disorders. As with any new person coming into a class, the students were quite hesitant to interact to me, and so they were for my first couple of visits, but eventually I became a normal sight within the class. The area in which the school is located, and the surrounding community, is quite diverse; as such I was expecting the same from the makeup of students within the class I did my clinical in…

I can empathize with teachers who say that the observation and evaluation process does not seem reciprocal in nature. Most of my follow-up evaluations have either been waived or conducted in five minutes or less in which the principal hits upon the highlights of my observation. Very few teaching lessons have been learned through these interactions. In her article though, Shelly Arneson includes sound practices that can be implemented to alleviate many of the concerns of the evaluation process. Her basic premise is to shift the dialogue from inspection-based conversation to a reflection-based conversation.…

As a student in a graduate school for education, my only teaching opportunity that I have had teaching in an inclusive classroom was during my early childhood practicum. I was placed at HCA in a pre-preschool room. In this classroom, I typically had more students with special needs and less general education student just because the general education students had to pay tuition to go to the pre-preschool class. In the morning class, I had two to three general education students with six students with special needs. In the afternoon class, I had four general education students and seven students with special needs.…
