Classroom Observation: Physical Education At Lindhurst High School

Decent Essays
For my classroom observation assignment, I had the pleasure to observe Tim Bradbury who teaches physical education at Lindhurst High School. Mr. Bradbury works at the same high school I coach baseball at so I have a pretty good relationship with him. I was very fortunate to observe Mr. Bradbury because he has been teaching physical education for over 10 years now and he gave me so much information that will help me become a successful teacher one day.

I observed Mr. Bradbury on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. The class I observed was a team sports class and it was during 5th period which started at 12:55 and ended at 1:55. The lesson was called “steal the bacon”. Mr. Bradbury separated the class into two groups. He numbered each student and

On Friday May 13 I was able to observe two P.E. classes at Mt. Stuart Elementary. There were two sections which I observed, first group was a 1st grade class and then a kindergarten class. It was a very cool experience, since I don’t remember P.E. classes back when I was young. One thing I enjoyed was the teacher’s enthusiasm when the students walked into the gym. He welcomed each student with a smile and with excitement.…

On Tuesday, October 20, 2015, I observed a fourth-grade class at Media Elementary School in Media, PA. The teacher was Mrs. Williamsons, and there was also a student teacher, Emily in the class. I was there most of the day and observed Mathematics, Social studies, Reading, and Writing class. The set-up of the room was traditional 3 wide rows facing the board so that everyone is closer to the board. Also, there was a sitting area with a rug and that was closer to the electronic board, where students sat for watching any videos for the class, and during the Reading class.…

Extended school year was an option I had heard discussed during IEP meetings in my fifteen years of experience, but today I was able to observe one of these classrooms in action first hand. The lesson I observed took place at a small group table with the teacher leading the lesson, a paraprofessional providing one on one support to one student, and a nurse supporting another student who is using a Tobii for communication. The teacher began the lesson by introducing a set of five sight words. The teacher then read the words aloud, gave a simple meaning, provided a sentence with the word, and the students traced the words with their fingers.…

On my first day of observing Mrs. Albita’s 4th grade classroom, I first noticed how she selected the student that would write the objective for the day. Mrs. Alba has a jar with popsicle sticks that contain the names of all the students in her class. She selects one stick and that student is responsible for writing the class objective correctly. First the student has to listen to the teacher carefully. Next, the student writes down what he/she heard.…

After that, they were given either the role of a “learner”/”student”, or a “teacher”. The interesting fact is that “Mr. Wallace” was actually a researcher and he always had the role of the student, which was obviously entirely planned out. The subjects were completely unaware of this. Afterwards, the “learner” was strapped to a chair and asked questions by the “teacher”. The teacher would name pairs of words to Mr. Wallace and test him by repeating one of those words.…

Also, many will note that not only does physical education take “time” away from other subjects, but it interferes and conflicts with timetabling and scheduling due to the need to share the gymnasium. This in turn will often “break up” solid blocks of literacy and numeracy time.” But undoubtedly this can be challenged, because even if PE takes time away from other classes, and interferes with gym sharing schedules, physical education is still a big part of the needed exercise and and education needed by students. Physical education does not only teach students about sports, but they also…

Ethical dilemmas are prevalent in education and, as leaders, we must find solutions that are fair and ethical for all stakeholders. A recent ethical dilemma that surfaced at my school involved a teacher and his use of physical contact with students. Our physical education teacher, who I’ll refer to as Mr. Smith, has a good rapport with students and coaches several sports outside of school. Mr. Smith has been teaching at our school for 10 years. He tends to make physical contact with students when greeting them, either with a hug or rub of the shoulder, and students have never complained about his seemingly warm nature in the past.…

Mussell and Ms. Potts demonstrated an effectively controlled physical education class. It was clear that the women had established a clear routine and expectations for their classes prior to the observed class. During the lesson, the teachers demonstrated effective classroom management by having students sit in the center of the gym while instructions were being given. When splitting up into teams the students were instructed to stand on a line in the gym, then they were counted off to make two teams; this was an effective and time efficient strategy for the lesson. Expectations for appropriate behavior and play were established in the instructions for the day, and these were effectively reinforced by both teachers throughout the activity.…

Being able to go out and observe in a classroom is something that makes me so excited to be a teacher in the future. I was able to observe a classroom and learn many techniques to encourage learning. On October 11 I went to Discovery Elementary School to observe in Mrs. Hibma’s classroom. This was a 3rd grade classroom, and this interested me because I would love to teach 3rd grade. There were 27 students in the classroom, which I found to be a large classroom.…
