Classroom Observation Paper

Much of what I am observing in Mrs. Logan’s class is repetitive, however, this last week after completing their math worksheets, she had the students work on addition, subtraction and amount vocabulary (larger, smaller, less, more, equal). To complete this task, she had one teacher using cards that showed the number and an equal number of shapes (card 5 would have 5 stars). She gave each student 2 cards and asked them to either add or subtract the two numbers. She then would ask the students who had the most or the least. This was fun to watch because they would get so excited when they could come up with the answer and “won” the question. In the other group, she had rocks with numbers on them. Students would pick a rock. They would then have to tell what number they had. She would then ask them who had the bigger or smaller number. The students …show more content…
The student we gave it to is in 3rd grade and has dyslexia. He is a smart kid, however, on this particular day he did not want to even try reading. It was hard to watch him struggle through this test. He is testing on a 2nd-grade level and got an 87% on his assessment. I have to say that I really am not a fan of the DIBELS on the tablets. I think as I get more comfortable using it, it will be a useful tool, however, I find it frustrating right at the moment. The teacher told me that it is confusing for him as well since not everyone in the school got to attend the training. He said that having to learn it from another busy teacher is challenging. Hopefully, when I get my own room I will have a teacher who is willing to help or get better at it through my observations. I feel like I am learning how much truly goes into teaching through a combination of observations in so many different rooms. I also understand why teachers get so mad when people say that teaching is easy, they do not realize how much it takes to be an effective

Polly showed understanding, so the lesson was extended by introducing another tens frame to challenge her understanding (Department of Education, 2013). For example she was asked” how many counters would fit into these two frames”. Polly answered twenty correctly without counting each box. She confidently made numbers in the teens and removed the counters correctly when asked to show various lower numbers. Two tens frames were used (see appendix 1) to represent two different groups such as “ten and two make…

On Monday February 22, 2016 Mrs. Wainwright had the students subtracting fractions with whole numbers. The problems had the same denominator, for example, 7 wholes and 3/10 subtract 2 wholes and 1/10. She would put a problem on the board, and when the students were done she would check them. The students are in groups, like Monday, Tuesday, etc, so if all the students on the same row got the answer right she would give their group points.…

(p.9) The book discussed numerous times about giving students multiple strategies to solve addition problems with number lines, charts, and representations because it is giving students mathematical proficiency and further understanding in addition. The lesson with the dice gave each student a chance to choose their own method of solving, then when they turned to their partners it allowed for them to openly discuss about their strategy, possibly learn a strategy that may further their understanding in mathematics. One of the last activity’s we did in college numeracy played the card game with decimals. Although it was an interactive fun game it was still furthering my understanding about place value and decimals.…

During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…
