The lovely warm sun provides a comfortable essence on my pale skin and beams on my white-blond hair. I glance around at the typical atmosphere of my school at lunchtime; children bustling about scurrying past me, and balls flying in the air. I have only been at this school for a few weeks and now I’m already used to the chaos during this time of day. I inspect my surroundings and recognize some of my fellow fourth grade students in different pods at the lunch table, reading books in the corner of the many clusters of classrooms, or playing games on the field. Looking behind me, I notice my group of friends. I smile widely out of satisfaction, and run up to the picnic bench they are sitting on.

The people “over there” that she is talking about are a really popular group of fifth graders that are, unfortunately, pretty selective about who they accept to be in their clique. I can’t believe Julia has the nerve to go talk to them. As she stands up, I can sense tension, and it is not a comfortable feeling. She slowly walks to the group of fifth graders as Zoe and Clara stand up quickly, glance from me to Julia and back, and then scurry up to where Julia is walking. Hope is crucial to have in all aspects of human nature, because without hope, there is nothing to live for, we would be extinct as a species. If you think about it, humans have forged through so many hardships and so much suffering only to come through still populating and discovering every day. As individuals we wake up each and every day working on our goals and hoping for something positive or fresh to happen in our life. Those who are truly hopeless give way to suicide. They are left with nothing to live for. We live each moment with a certain desire and outcome of an event. In the novel, hope is displayed primarily through Shukhov and how he had a positive mindset through working long tiring days. By hoping for an end to his prison sentence in the very near future as well as seeing his family, Shukhov was optimistic. His positive attitude was greatly reflected in his strong work ethic, and how he took pride in his work. When Shukhov was rewarded with an extra helping of food for how well he had worked that day despite the seriously cold weather conditions, he realized that with a positive mindset, he could accomplish anything. An example of this is displayed when Shukhov exclaims with much enthusiasm, “We’ll get through! We’ll get through it all! And God grant it’ll all come to an end”(120). The first thing I noticed when I walked into Jasmine Middle School was how big the eighth graders were. I knew that in middle school the sixth graders would be the babies, but it was still kind of a shock at how big eighth graders really were; well, at least I hoped the kids I was looking at were eighth graders. If the group of kids hanging out by the lockers were seventh graders, then eighth graders must be huge. Luckily, after looking around for a few seconds, I spotted my best friend, Georgina Larson by the water fountain. She’s never hard to find, because her hair is light blonde, and she’s always wearing really flashy outfits.…

Learning is one of the most imperative aspects of a child’s life, they begin learning far before they even comprehend what it means to learn. As they grow, their parents teach them good and bad and right from wrong, the most basic forms of education. Soon enough they are exposed to daycare and other social settings, and are learning to separate from their parents and cooperate with other children. Finally they start school and are ready to complicate their education with numbers and words that will slowly start to make sense. To help analyze this process, I interviewed an eleven year old girl named Sasha Brown.…
