The lovely warm sun provides a comfortable essence on my pale skin and beams on my white-blond hair. I glance around at the typical atmosphere of my school at lunchtime; children bustling about scurrying past me, and balls flying in the air. I have only been at this school for a few weeks and now I’m already used to the chaos during this time of day. I inspect my surroundings and recognize some of my fellow fourth grade students in different pods at the lunch table, reading books in the corner of the many clusters of classrooms, or playing games on the field. Looking behind me, I notice my group of friends. I smile widely out of satisfaction, and run up to the picnic bench they are sitting on.

Hope is crucial to have in all aspects of human nature, because without hope, there is nothing to live for, we would be extinct as a species. If you think about it, humans have forged through so many hardships and so much suffering only to come through still populating and discovering every day. As individuals we wake up each and every day working on our goals and hoping for something positive or fresh to happen in our life. Those who are truly hopeless give way to suicide. They are left with nothing to live for. We live each moment with a certain desire and outcome of an event. In the novel, hope is displayed primarily through Shukhov and how he had a positive mindset through working long tiring days. By hoping for an end to his prison sentence in the very near future as well as seeing his family, Shukhov was optimistic. His positive attitude was greatly reflected in his strong work ethic, and how he took pride in his work. When Shukhov was rewarded with an extra helping of food for how well he had worked that day despite the seriously cold weather conditions, he realized that with a positive mindset, he could accomplish anything.
