Kindergarten social hierarchies were determined using a modification of a naturalistic behavioral observation method developed to assess individual dominance positions in preschool classrooms (Strayer & Trudel, 1984). Classroom interactions were observed during the winter months of the kindergarten year (prior to the spring assessment of externalizing symptoms) during structured, semi structured, and free play activities. Social dominance was operationally defined as a pattern of repeated interactions in which the outcome consistently favors the same dyad member (Drews, 1993). Research assistants underwent training in the recognition and scoring of a range of dominance-subordination behaviors, which included object and attention acquisition

    In the Pre-K classroom that I observed it consisted of several different centers for the children to participate in, such as: block area, dramatic play, art, library, sand/water table, music/movement, sensory area, finger painting, play dough, and the students got the opportunity to make their own snacks.     I found it quite interesting how in public schools in the Chicago area I have experienced seeing how teachers treat children differently. Inside an early start Pre-k class beforehand the teacher and her assistant gave me a bit of information about the students to retain when I had to work with them one-on-one.
