It may appear like just child’s play, but toddlers are hard at work learning important physical skills as they gain muscle control, balance, and coordination. This is what I learned the day I observed my 36-month-old niece when on a play date with two other toddlers. Through observation I was able to gain a good understanding of why play is so critical at this stage in their growth and development, and I believe that there is no better way to learn about these themes than by observing play in action. This paper will discuss my observations and how it compares or contrasts to what is expected in the development of toddlers. Comparisons Play amplifies toddlers’ physical and psychosocial development.…

In the Pre-K classroom that I observed it consisted of several different centers for the children to participate in, such as: block area, dramatic play, art, library, sand/water table, music/movement, sensory area, finger painting, play dough, and the students got the opportunity to make their own snacks. Not only did the students get to participate in centers, they had the opportunity each day to go outside and play on the playground as well as having an interactive lecture every morning at circle time and when the students sat down at their tables to do their daily worksheet. I believe that the Pre-K class I observed was a mix between traditional teaching as well as constructivism, creating a balance between the two. In the morning during circle time, the teacher would “lecture” the students with the letter of the day, go over the date, months, days of the week, shapes, and the numbers up to the date it currently was.…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…

Learning is one of the most imperative aspects of a child’s life, they begin learning far before they even comprehend what it means to learn. As they grow, their parents teach them good and bad and right from wrong, the most basic forms of education. Soon enough they are exposed to daycare and other social settings, and are learning to separate from their parents and cooperate with other children. Finally they start school and are ready to complicate their education with numbers and words that will slowly start to make sense. To help analyze this process, I interviewed an eleven year old girl named Sasha Brown.…
