Our group observed a computer lab for game design majors on three separate occasions. The reason we chose a game design lab is that there are numerous interactions that tend to occur simultaneously. While the lab is a place designed for productivity, students use the space for other a range of activities, such as working on school assignments, socializing, or engaging in recreation. We expect to observe behaviors like these in this setting. The computer lab is a large room, comprised of curved desks of computers, each equipped with two monitors. The space has an open design, allowing for people to move around and work together easily. We primarily observed presumed students frequent and use the lab. These people almost always wore jackets or sweatshirts, t-shirts, pants and sneakers, and carried backpacks. Most of the students in the lab, whether in a group or as individuals, were men. We saw less than 10 women in the lab at one time over the three instances we observed. Also, although we do not know ethnicities of individuals for certain, students’ ethnic appearances were somewhat diverse; a majority of people were white, followed by asian (including Indian and Middle Eastern), hispanic, and black. …show more content…
A majority of people would remain by themselves at a computer, and most of these would be wearing headphones or have headphones on their person. On a few occasions, an individual at a computer would be approached by another person or in even rarer cases multiple people would approach the individual, and a conversation between the two or more would emerge, seemingly about the task the first person was doing or about something the two or more people had in common, such as a class or friend group. Some people would enter and exit the lab as a group, and others did not join the group after they arrived at the

The article, “Why Laptops in Class Are Distracting America’s Future Workforce” was written by Timothy D. Snyder in 2010. His purpose in writing this article was to persuade professors against having laptops in the classroom because he feels they are a distraction. The arguments Snyder uses against laptops in classrooms are, they distract students’ attention, students miss out of the best part of American life, and he generalizes that this lack of attention will spill over into the workplace. Snyder discusses various online chatting forums such as Skype, Gchat, or iChat that students are engaged in on their laptops during class.…

The main problem that we plan to run into is funding. Seton Hall already provides a smaller and not as well put together commuter lounge. We suppose it will be difficult to convince them that a new and improved lounge is a smart use of their money. This problem will be tackled with simple statistics. Currently commuters make up about 35% of the population here at Seton Hall which means their is a definite need to please these students who make up such a large part of the school's population.…

As an ethnographer today’s task will be to observe a diversity of students at the California State University Long Beach. I have gathered my computer as well as a lunch to company me while I observe my surrounding and how students’ interaction and behave at the university. I chose to have a seat outside the student union on a round table by the door where Wells Fargo bank, and Sbarro pizza is located. My surroundings have many round tables where students can seat as well as couches to enjoy a nap. There is a long way up of stairs to go up the dining plaza.…

In the Pre-K classroom that I observed it consisted of several different centers for the children to participate in, such as: block area, dramatic play, art, library, sand/water table, music/movement, sensory area, finger painting, play dough, and the students got the opportunity to make their own snacks. Not only did the students get to participate in centers, they had the opportunity each day to go outside and play on the playground as well as having an interactive lecture every morning at circle time and when the students sat down at their tables to do their daily worksheet. I believe that the Pre-K class I observed was a mix between traditional teaching as well as constructivism, creating a balance between the two. In the morning during circle time, the teacher would “lecture” the students with the letter of the day, go over the date, months, days of the week, shapes, and the numbers up to the date it currently was.…

I found it quite interesting how in public schools in the Chicago area I have experienced seeing how teachers treat children differently. Inside an early start Pre-k class beforehand the teacher and her assistant gave me a bit of information about the students to retain when I had to work with them one-on-one. Furthermore in the process of them informing me of their behaviors, what to expect, what not to expect, and reasons why some have some sorts of trouble do to their families background. We began our research based on the interesting findings from the mini-observation session at the beginning of the unit. In this practice run, we were asked to observe dominance and submission in social interaction around campus and while doing this we noticed a pattern of technology use that we decided to pursue further. From here we started with the broader deductive research question asking how technology affects interaction. After the observations we settled on two other more focused inductive questions: how does technology affect interactions between two or more people in a prosocial environment (coffee shops, in this instance) and how do people depend on technology? We began collecting data with the four researchers each collecting one…

As a freshman who has only been in college for a week I wanted to know what a college student life was like. I was interested in finding out how students socialize in the dining hall. I recently observed Joanne Bateman teach her students about the Earth’s and moon’s rotation, the complexity of space travel, and the engineering design process in a lesson about rockets. Students had to build model rockets that could land on a spinning model moon. Students were placed in cooperative groups of two to four students for this engineering activity. For this clinical supervision process, I used the Framework for Teaching form F for pre- and post-conferences and form G for the formal observation summary.…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students.…

Because it was lunch time, almost every person was eating. Whether they are alone or in a group, the majority of the people in the galley were using some form of technology. We found it particularly interesting that most of the meetings were organic and did not seem prescheduled.…
