The teacher must not stop the lesson, but simply the acknowledgement to off task student. If the student continues, you can use your proximity in the classroom. For example, if the student sits in a corner of the room and they are chatting with a fellow student, simply walk closer to that side of the room. In the article “Mastering classroom management (Part I)” by Michael Ramano (2012) he stated, “Proximity is key. One of the easiest ways to maintain classroom control is to walk around while you teach” (para. 4). You must continue to teach during this time to keep the flow of the lesson. The teacher must also keep yourself from bringing too much attention to that student. If the student does not seem to pick up on your first few cues the teacher can simply ask the student a question. For instance, asking the student if everything is alright will bring attention to them during their side conversation. The students spend a lot of their day with the teacher. The teacher set examples of good manners, emotions, and their students will often reflect what they learn. As the teacher they should get to know each of their students. In the article “Motivating students to behave in socially competent ways” by Kathtyn R. Wnetzel (2003) she supports, “A full appreciation of why students display positive classroom behavior requires an understanding of students personal goals, as well as the degree to which these goals are valued by the teacher and peers” (para. 1). Learn their goals, dreams, likes, and dislikes. If the teacher shows their students that you take interest in them they will open up to them, and will help the involvement in the classroom a lot more. Norris (2003) she added, “The classroom climate they establish for themselves and their students greatly affects the learning process” (para. 10). Once students feel like they are secure in the classroom they will want to become involved with answering questions or helping with the lesson.
