Since being at Munger Hill Elementary for my observation hours I have learned and been taught so much about classroom management. Classroom management is very essential and critical to have because if it wasn’t done our jobs as teachers would be difficult and unorganized. I am very glad that I have learned some new things on how to manage a classroom because as a teacher in the future I will use these things in my classroom. I have learned that my cooperating teacher has many beliefs about the children and classroom management. One of her beliefs about the children and classroom management that I think is the most important is that the main key to a well functioning classroom is creating respect with other students and the teacher and the …show more content…
Necessary changes are only made with the rules if she thinks the students don’t really understand the rule completely and is confused by it because of sometimes having the wording be to hard. Yes I do personally think that the rules are applied equally and consistently to all the students. The reason why I think the rules are applied equally and consistently to all the students is because if the students break any of the rules they all know what the consequences are. The teacher made sure when she was making the rules for the classroom to apply them to all the students equally and accurately. Yes I do think the established rules match my own beliefs of classroom management. I strongly believe that rules like this should be followed in every classroom regardless if they are for special ed students or not. I know that when I am a teacher that these basic rules are ones that I will apply in my classroom so they can be taught basic skills that will help them all throughout the school year which deal with behavior and management. Classroom organization and rituals I noticed are parts of the classroom management system. My teacher establishes these two things by sometimes sending home little notes to the parents of students saying they had a good day or if they misbehave those parents get a negative note instead. Some of the students in class usually get negative notes sent home to parents instead because there are a couple who I have noticed misbehave a lot. Another thing my teacher does to establish these two things is by sometimes giving certain students during the day little breaks because they require them. In the class there is a corner in the room where it is considered a cool off corner where students sometimes need to

I believe that classroom management is essential in any academic environment. If students are in a safe environment than learning can commence. Classroom environment is also student and goal oriented which means all variables for an effective classroom revolves around the students and their particular goals. I want the students to partake in their learning process. The main goal is to have a classroom where behavior problems are at a minimum and maximize students’ engagement to the curriculum. As the teacher, I am committed to unlock the students potential in order for students to showcase their developed skill sets to the real world. Without a classroom that is organized with instilled discipline then it will be difficult for students to…

The first research study that I analyzed is The Effect of a Professional Development Classroom Management Model on At-Risk Elementary Students’ Misbehaviors by Dr. Gary Reglin, Dr. Joretta Akpo-Sanni, and Dr. Nonofo Losike-Sedimo. The copyright to the article is by Project Innovation and it was published in Fall 2012. I found the study through a search on ERIC (Educational Reform Information Center) by using the search terms ‘Classroom Management’ and ‘Discipline’. The reason that I chose this study is because it focused on elementary students and a strategy that the participants used to decrease misbehavior in their classroom. Although the study describes the students as ‘at-risk’, those students may be in any classroom to a varying…

Educators should explain the rules at the beginning of the school year and review them frequently in all classroom environments. caught following the rules appropriately they should receive verbal praise. This is especially important for students diagnosed with ADHD. They need more frequent praise than their peers to reinforce the targeted behaviors. They should also have fewer rules that are posted closer in proximity to them as compared to peers or placed on an index card and attached to their desk (DuPaul, Weyandt, & Janusis, 2011).…

One the first day of school, a discussion will be held between the teacher and students to brainstorm common classroom procedures and rules. The teacher should write down all suggestions the students have on the board and what category they may fall under, i.e. rules/expectations or classroom procedures when coming into class. After students have completed suggesting rules and expectations, the teacher should then let students vote on what they feel are the 5-6 most effective rules and procedures for the classroom environment. Rules should be stated in plain English and positively worded. To build a sense of family in the classroom, the teacher can break the students into groups and create posters with the rules explicitly stated to post around the…

Good classroom management starts on the first day of school. It does not work if you start out by being the “nice and fun” teacher. It is essential that my students know on the first day of school that I will not tolerate disrespect and chaos. On the first day of school I went over my class rules with the students and pointed out where the class rules are posted if students ever need reference. Once I have established my class rules, the students were given time to collaborate and come up with some of their own rules that they felt were necessary to establish a safe and welcoming learning environment.…

My second placement is a first grade class with a high number of Individualized Educational Plans (I.E.Ps). There are sixteen students in our first grade class, which contains seven girls and nine boys. One behavior management that my mentor teacher uses is the colored clip stick. She has a yard stick that has been painted starting from red on the bottom which is “Parent Contact.” The next step up is orange which is “Make Better Choices,” which is followed by yellow and is named “Think about it.” Everyday our students start off on green which is known as “Ready to Learn.” If our students misbehave or do not follow directions assigned by their teacher they will be asked to move a clip down to yellow. Although there has been many studies that discourage the use of “Behavior Clips,” my teacher also provides her students with opportunities to move their clips back up. If a student has had to move their clip down from green, but has been showing improvement throughout the day; she will allow the child to move their clip back up to green. The Behavior Clips also give the opportunity to move up from green. The first step up from green is blue or “Good Choices.” We allow the students who are doing their work quietly, following directions, or being…

Lastly, I want to ensure that all of my students have gained respect for their selves and others because after all that’s where a successful classroom must…

Analysis of the Chapter: Managing a classroom comes with a lot to consider and your students are just part of it! As a teacher you must first realize that you are there for a lot more than just teaching a lesson, you are also there to be a meaningful influence to your students and their behavior. Behavior is always a major concern as a classroom teacher. You walk into your classroom on the first day of school knowing very little about your students or what their educational background is. Luckily if the teacher has the right approach to behavior problems a student’s background actual plays only a small part in the success of a classroom and the whole school year in general. Although a student’s…

It takes much time, critical thinking and lots of planning. Unfortunately, we sometimes must learn through trial and error. Always remember to have fun in setting up and establishing your classroom. Do not become stressed out and never be filled with so much pride or embarrassment that you never ask for help. As team members, we should be available to help each…

I really enjoyed the time I spent in Mrs. Flinn’s fourth grade classroom over Spring Break. I was able to observe for a total of four hours between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. During my time with the fourth graders, I took a closer look at the solid behavior classroom supports being used. Along with these supports, I was extremely impressed by the way Mrs. Flinn handled classroom management. Even though I observed during a very exciting week, she had great control over her students. After speaking with Mrs. Flinn, it was easy to see that this effective classroom management comes from her focus on relationship building. I could tell that she has a strong, solid relationship with each and every one of her students, and I think this…

Respecting one another will be an expectation in my classroom and there will be no tolerance for being disrespectful. I view students as equals because they are at school to gain an education and just like I expect them to listen and respect me I will do the same for them. They will learn better and listen if I demonstrate that I care for their best interest in learning. I do not believe that establishing a democratic classroom and giving students responsibility is letting them take over the classroom because students will have their own opinion, they are all unique individuals who not only learn differently but have a different way of thinking and allowing them to have a say in their own learning is not letting them control the classroom. It is the teacher’s responsibility to set rules and expectations in the classroom and control students who are repeating bad…

The quote, “Classroom management is 90% of the job. The remaining 90% is delivery of instruction,” means to me that good classroom management is needed, but you need to teach the students so they can connect to the science they are learning about. The room should be arranged nicely and clear, specific rules should be in place for the daily routine and housekeeping of the class. As their teacher, I should have high expectations and plan accordingly.…
