Fifth problem which new teachers can face is prioritizing tasks. For a new teacher, it is easy to be overloaded by the bewildering amount of work that needs to be accomplished each school day. According to McCormack & Thomas (2006), “Multiple expectations including programming, catering for a range of student needs, assessment and reporting and the overriding issues of classroom management provide considerable stresses on early teaching experiences. “ Most of this work need to be done right away. It is also needs to be done well so the students can make progress in their learning. Whereas our daily tasks will change during the course of the year, our priorities will not. According to Thompson (2013), the ten most important priorities are the following: providing an orderly and safe environment in which courtesy is the order of the day, accepting the role of a classroom leader, quick developing and maintaining a positive relationship with every learner, becoming thoroughly familiar with the content of teaching, establishing clear objectives for students’ learning, recognizing and addressing the diverse needs of students, developing interesting and innovative strategies for teaching the material the students need to know, providing helpful and timely feedback, maintaining accurate records so instructional decisions can be driven by relevant data, working in collaboration with other educators, students, and their parents or guardians. I know that much of the time, I will be working in my classroom. I know that it is important to reflect on the personal strengths, acknowledge what I can do well, and focus on what needs to be accomplished. It is crucial not to become too overwhelmed by all that there is to do, because teaching is like housework – there is always more one can do! I must to establish priorities and focus on important tasks first. I know that being a new teacher will require much physical and emotional energy. It is important to stay positive and do not be discouraged even when the going becomes tough. It is important to guard against becoming disheartened during the frenzied pace of the first year. It is also important sometimes to relax, have some fun, and laugh with the students. I am sure that my mentors and colleagues will show me how to navigate the complexities of the school system and will provide me with a social and emotional support system. I know that I will refine my vision of what it means to be a teacher, and my personal philosophy of teaching will develop more. I believe I will move toward a greater sense of teacher efficacy and confidence when I will be able to say to myself, “I know I can teach any and all of these kids!” I am ready to grow professionally and personally, become more comfortable with my new teaching role and professional responsibilities.
