Classroom Management Behavior

Classroom management can be challenging and can disrupt a learning environment to the extent that no learning occurs. As the classroom dynamic changes, so does the recognition and rewards. Teaching in special education environments has similar challenges, predominately behavioral. Students often come to class unprepared, intentionally disruptive and disengaged on learning, as one can imagine this can be stressful especially when the classroom size exceeds that of a desired student teacher ratio.
One of my most memorable students had a hard time adjusting to the structural environment of the classroom. This student was very disrupting; he often talk out, yell across the room at other students, disrespecting

In an effort to help identify the best tools to help him to be more engaged in learning, I began to research his education career. Unfortunately, there was no efficient Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) that was set in place for this student, the prior year he was placed at Special Programs and his transfer was revoked, and he was send back to his home school. His actions affected not only the pace of the curriculum, instruction time and the other student ability to remain focus on coursework and their learning, countless times to redirecting the student to stay on …show more content…
In order for me to improve the learning and motivation of this student and the class, I needed to assist the student to become better at their assignments and behaviorally (Martella, 2015). The reinforcement that I use to do this was the Fixed-interval and Variable-interval reinforcement. In this case, I give the students tickets. These tickets could be used to for 10 minutes of free time on the computer on Fridays, or other things that he felt was interesting to him, eating lunch in my room or other items. I first started giving tickets if he came in to class and was quieted, working, being nice to the other students no matter how little it was. Once his behavior started changing, I started giving tickets out in Fixed interval. By the end of the year, his behavior had changed and tickets were not needed, but were still

When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

My mentor teacher’s assumptions about this specific student’s behavior definitely had a negative effect on the student’s learning because he would constantly be missing classroom instruction due to being on timeout. I noticed that whenever the student was placed on timeout or was called out in front of the class, he would feel discouraged. One of the days that I had come into the classroom, the class had a substitute teacher for half the day. This substitute teacher was very calm and understanding and knew that this student was on a behavior contract.…

With this assignment, I gained the knowledge necessary to design and implement environmental and instructional adaptations to assist in supporting my student’s academic progress and appropriate behaviors. This assignment was challenging at times due to the severity of my student’s negative behavior, but throughout the class I gained more knowledge in helping to support my student by adapting the environmental and instructional needs of my student. As I worked on completing the Behavior Intervention Plan, I was challenged to first look at the antecedents that may evoke the student’s behavior, and how the consequence may be maintaining the student’s behavior. In this assignment, I found that each time my student would engaged in self-injurious behavior the activity would stop, and we would automatically give her a break. Although, throughout completing the behavior intervention plan, I came up with a replacement behavior that would give the student the same outcome of receiving a break, but requesting it with appropriate work…

When it came to behavioral problems in the classroom, the teachers would very rarely address the inappropriate behavior of a the student, and instead would just give them a time-out type of punishment. Some children would have to move a clip with their name on it from a “paying attention, learning” board, to one reflecting their current attitude, “disruptive, not focused.” However, in this process, the student was never thoroughly spoken to about their actions, although, I must note again, that I was only present for a short period of time and while issues may have been addressed at a later date, they were not when I was…

Having difficulty relating to an ever-growing diverse group of students, inability to evaluate student behavior, and the incapacity to produce affective mediations to promote academic success in students; these factors can help explain why teachers cannot handle behavior problems successfully. (Gable, R. A., Hester, P. P., Hester, L. R., Hendrickson, J., & Sze, S. 2005, p. 40). In order to help students, teachers must be able to understand the origin of the behaviors to gain clarity. One way is to recall what previous research has to…

Classroom management is crucial for every teacher to have in a successful learning environment. I believe that students need to be controlled and disciplined; students at this age need to be guided in the right path. They are capable of self-discipline but need to be shown what the rules of the classroom are and what is the expectation of the teacher. I believe that students are basically good but that the environment around them influences them tremendously. If they maintain busy with instruction then they will not have time to be disruptive and they need to be guided to behave appropriately.…
