Chapter 2: Literature Review
Purpose of the Review This literature review sheds light on certain points including: 1) characteristics of collaborative classroom, 2) role of teachers in a collaborative classroom, 3) role of students in a collaborative classroom, 4) and a summary.
Characteristics of Collaborative Classroom The collaboration skill sets refer to the ability of individuals to communicate clearly, using oral, written, and non-verbal languages, and collaborate effectively and responsibly with diverse populations (Pacific Policy Research Center, 2010). Hence there is a set of characteristics the can describe a collaborative classroom.
Shared knowledge among teachers and students: the metaphor for collaborative classrooms is shared knowledge. The teacher has vital knowledge about content, skills, and instruction, and still provides that

Successful mediation helps students connect new information to their experiences and to learning in other areas, helps students figure out what to do when they are stumped, and helps them learn how to learn. Above all, the teacher as mediator adjusts the level of information and support so as to maximize the ability to take responsibility for learning. (M.B. Tinzmann, B.F. Jones, T.F. Fennimore, J. Heterogeneous groupings of students: a critical characteristic of collaborative classrooms is that students are not segregated according to supposed ability, achievement, interests, or any other characteristic. Segregation seriously weakens collaboration and impoverishes the classroom by depriving all students of opportunities to learn from and with each other. (M.B. Tinzmann, B.F. Jones, T.F. Fennimore, J. Bakker, C. Fine, and J. Pierce NCREL, Oak Brook, 1990)
