The task I volunteered to do was help some elderly men and women move into their living quarters at the nursing home. Being young and strong, I was asked and up for the task. One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

The first service learning experience I had was Into the Streets, a campus wide event that has all students and faculty volunteering around the community. During this affair the women’s soccer team was assigned to work at the Gospel Mission Thrift Store, where we hung and sorted clothes and later placed them on racks. On first arrival the racks for clothes were empty, after our four hour shift the clothes were smooshed together so tightly there was no room…

For my service learning project, I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Gregg County, which is one of the centers that had merged with the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines in Marshall (Cromer, 2016). The mission statement of the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines is “To empower the kids of East Texas to be great” (About the Club, 2016). In addition to this statement, the organization as a whole seeks “To inspire and equip all young people, especially those that need us most, to achieve their full potential as healthy, productive, responsible caring citizens” (About the Club, 2016). The statement is apparent when I was volunteering. The students of various ages were given the opportunity to enhance their skills.…

Not only did these classes offer Young hands-on experience, but they also introduced her to a new style of learning. “It made me kind of disappointed going to other classes because I felt like sometimes I would be just memorizing things out of a textbook and that I could be using my education for so many other things,” said Young, “or that I felt like I was learning more in service learning than I was just sitting in a lecture.” Besides the experience, connections made with instructors and other peers help students feel like they are a significant part of a larger community.…
