As a diverse student with a variety of interests and passions, the liberal arts program and energetic community atmosphere at Bates draws me to its campus. I enjoy learning many different subjects and discovering the connections between them all. Recently, my Physics teacher and my Calculus teacher collaborated on a problem the class was assigned and I was able to see how both teachers concurred the same issue from different angles. As a student involved in many school sponsored service events, such as Wreaths Across America and National Honors Society, I am inspired to see that Bates also encourages students to be a part of the Lewiston community. I would be interested getting involved with the Root Cellar volunteers in the community. I am

Doing clinical observations are very important because it gives a change to see student and teacher interactions first hand and get to see how well a student is responding. During my observations at Biddeford Intermediate School, I got the change to shadow an Ed. Teach in a life skills room. This was a great opportunity for me because it was a chance to see another kind of intervention done in the special education department. I have done many observations with an occupational therapist, and they have always been in lighting and very educational, but to visit a life skills room gave me more perspective on the special education department as a whole.…

Classroom Culture I attended Gary A. Knox, which is an elementary school to observe a classroom on their culture. In their student handbook it says that the students are expected to be respectful, responsible, and safe to the rules. If they are to break the rules they will be held accountable for their behavior. They want their students to be trustworthy, loyal, honest, and have integrity.…

Being a member of the Appalachia Volunteers of Boston College has been one of my most defining experiences in the past 2 and a half years. The Appalachia Volunteers Program is a yearlong program than includes weekly Sunday night meetings based on the program’s mission “to love, learn, and serve” and culminates in a weeklong service trips to the Appalachian region and beyond. Through both the meetings and my experiences on these service trips I have gained new perspectives and learned more about myself than I had ever thought possible and I will be forever grateful for that. Love is all around. The Appalachia Volunteers Program introduced me to the concept of agape, and showed me this unconditional, selfless love first hand.…

The classroom setting is for, four-year-old preschool aged children. The idea behind the preschool comes from Piaget’s theory that children learn by a process of adaptation, assimilation, and then accommodation. During the first step, they interpret new stimulation in ways that fit with what they already know. As the new information assimilates, the existing knowledge modifies and creates a better match. Lastly, the child’s understanding gradually changes from the interaction with the environment.…

Throughout five semesters of Leadership Byrnes, I have done quite a lot of community service. From volunteering at Ashlan Village, The Carpenter’s Table, Middle Tyger, Duncan Elementary, Reidville Elementary, and many others, I’ve learned a lot and I’ve seen a lot. The feeling you get after doing any type of community service is something you can explain, but you cannot truly understand how it makes you feel until you have done it. I believe the most meaningful community service that I have done, would be volunteering at The Carpenter’s Table. The Carpenter’s Table is a non-profit organization that allows people to get food for their family.…

I am writing to you not only to save the grades of my peers, but to save your time in the catastrophic event of grading our papers. As a student of your class, I speak out of personal experience when I say that my class and I are not ready to write an essay on the chapter we have just read. If my class were to complete an essay, it would result in many deficiencies and miserable students. Additionally, these miserable students would also have furious guardians.…

James Baldwin’s “A Talk to Teachers” was first delivered October 16, 1963, as “The Negro Child- His Self-Image.” The speech was first published in The Saturday Review, December 21, 1963, and was later reprinted in The Price of the Ticket, Collected Non-Fiction 1948-1985, Saint Martins 1985. Baldwin presented the speech to ask New York’s schoolteachers for help during the civil rights movement. Within my English co-taught classroom, I differentiate through 5 different ways. One differentiation I do is placed the students based on reading levels. I have done Fountas and Pinnell running records in order to place my students in groups. This is important because during stations groups the students are placed with their groups (What is Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) and how is BAS used?). A second differentiation, I do is the way I co-teach with my co-teacher.…

While attending the College of Coastal Georgia I have worked very hard to balance my time between class, school, work and extracurricular activities. My first year at the college I was a Freshman Senator in the student Government Association, a member of the Seaswell’s Literary Magazine, and a member of the Urban Gaming club. I’ve always tried to be involved in volunteer services in the community, so I continued to help out with the Satilla River Clean-up, which I had done throughout high school as well. I also volunteered for, and continue to each year, the Jekyll Island Beach clean-up and the Brantley County Relay for Life. I was a member of the Center of Academic Success, and through the program visited Sapelo Island’s Gullah festival and…

The parish school is an independent school that serves children of 18 months to 12 years of age that have difficulties in the areas of language, communication, and/or learning. At this school I had the opportunity to observe two classrooms. The age range for the first classroom is 2-3 years of age. In this classroom, the teacher who is a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP), was conducting a fun activity. It consisted of showing the class pictures of different animals, and as she was showing them, she produced the animal sound that corresponded to each animal.…

The game was also challenging for me as well as fun and interesting. Just like you mentioned we want to win the game so it kept pushing us to try harder. Great idea from GCU to implement the game as a way of studying. This class is teaching so much about fallacies and how a lot of us use them in our daily conversations with other without even realizing it.…
