As educators, our roles do not just stop at teaching the students, we need to extend further. We need to make family connections, and involve parents in our students learning processes. Epstein (1995) talks about how educators are often left questioning how to involve the families, I think that Mrs. Bennetts school found some great ways to bring the parents into the school and make the connections we need to. I love the idea of bringing parents into the classroom to learn the various games that students are using in their learning. At the same time, I would love to send students home with those games and teach their parents at home. Jeyes (2011) mentions “Low-income and minority parents often perceive teachers and principals as demanding a great deal from them and offering little in return.” showing that sometimes parents might feel a demand to come into the classroom. I think that we need to send home the games with the students and if they have the ability to come into school to play the games, great if not they can play them with the students when it works for them. We, as teachers, need to remember that parents not only have the responsibility to support the students academics but also support their families living which can keep them from the “demands” that Jeyes
