Classroom Behavior Case Study: Jayson

Jayson, a 7-year-old boy, was referred by his parents because they have become increasingly concerned about his behavior not only in school but also at home. His homeroom teacher indicated that he exhibits difficulties concentrating, sustaining attention, and has encountering ongoing classroom problems. In class, Jayson is always tapping hands or feet in the seat. He throws eraser to his friends and frequently leaves his seat during classroom instruction. His behavior problems were initially reported in preschool and have continued through his first grade. Jayson school grades are “hardly satisfactory”. Jayson’s mom said her son was generally “out of control” at home. He would not listen to her commands and often ran around the house.

Joey’s disruptive behavior is motivated by a need for adult attention that manifests in the form of talking out of turn, loudly and off topic. The antecedents include: interrupting when the teacher gives attention to his classmates, talking louder if he feels he is being ignored, and off topic outbursts when he is disengaged or bored.
