Special Ed Classroom Observation

After drawing out a diagram of the classroom I am observing in for the first part of this narrative I realized after including everything on the drawing the organization of this classroom contributes to the academic and social growth of the diverse learners in the classroom. It is very important for a classroom like this to be set up the way it is presented especially for a small special ed class with only 7 students. One way the organization contributes to academic and social growth for diverse learners is because everyday when the students come in they all know what part of the room to go to too get there work for the day. If they are not taught now how to organize they aren’t going to have these skills to do as well in the future. The students know where the bins for classwork and supplies are located in the classroom and are able to proceed with their work. For example in the classroom there is a number line, an alphabet and word wall. By having these hung up around the room and labeled on the wall the students will know if they forget a word, letter or number they are able to locate this to assist them to complete the work. Another labeling and organization piece in the classroom that contributes to the students’ growth is the location of tools or supplies the students may need to get there work done. If the class is doing a type of activity in math reading or writing that involves getting supplies to write, draw or color the labeling of supplies helps them access what they need to get there work done. The cabinets with shelves that are located in the class contain bins with each of the students’ math, reading and writing notebooks. So whenever the students are asked by the teacher to access any of these they are easily able to find them because of the labeling/
