“The White Lie assumes that the truth will cause more damage than a simple, harmless untruth.” (p. 160). The White Lie is like keeping a secret from someone because it would hurt them, or because “it is what is best for them.” (p. 160). If someone found out that we gave them the white lie, then that person can have a hard time trusting them again or might never trust them anymore.
The next lie that is told is the Out And Out Lies. Also known as the bald-faced lies. This lie hides the true meanings in things. “When this sort of lie is told, it can be easily confronted” (p. 165, Ericsson). The Out And Out Lies can cause an argument with anyone and can’t “refashion reality, it tries to refute it” (Ericsson). The Out And Out lies are like watching someone break an expensive item and when you confront then they would lie about breaking that particular item.
Third, this lie is known as Dismissal. “Dismissal is perhaps the slipperiest of all lies” *(p. 166). For example, “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!
