Classical Music Concert Review Essay

I attended a classical music concert on Saturday. The concert is part of a fifteen-day USA tour of the chamber orchestra that originated in London, the Academy of St. Martin In The Fields with Joshua Bells. Joshua Bells is a very well-known violinist and music director of the Academy of St. Martin In The Fields. Joshua Bells is the first person to hold the title of music director of this chamber orchestra since the orchestra was formed in 1958 by Sir Neville Marriner. People were dressed very formal and proceeded to seat in an organized and professional manner upon arriving. As soon as the concert began the crowd took their seats and stayed quiet in order to enjoy the music and show respect for the orchestra and the musicians playing.

At first, I was skeptical about going to a classical music concert because people often think of it as boring and think they do not know much about the genre. Upon researching the programs and listening to pieces, I realized that many sounded familiar and realized classical music is played very often in television and used in many ways. 21” composed by Mendelssohn. This program was my favorite because of the mood is projected and it made me feel peaceful and hopeful. Also, the sound that affected and interested me the most were the strings, specifically the violins. I enjoy the violins the most because of its high pitch but also can go from a really low and soft note to a very high one. Also, I learned that “A midsummer Night’s Dream” was composed by Mendelssohn to accompany the mood and theme of Shakespeare’s play called “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” after Mendelssohn familiarized himself with Shakespeare’s writings when he was a boy. Lastly, I was amazed by learning to see a story created by musical instruments and no narrating voice, which is something I was not used to and did not think

I loved the last piece in the third movement because it was played very well and it is an iconic piece. I had different emotions for the individual pieces were I felt at ease, delighted, and anxious with a dynamic feeling when the pieces go fast paced. This time I remembered the fast parts since I expected than the other first concert. The most memorable was Moonlight, presto movement. For the chamber groups they projected a playful vibe between each other enjoying when it alternates to one another.…

Overall I expected it to be a great performance, and it is safe to say my expectations were met. There was a lot of kids, and babies in attendance which I didn’t expect at all. The performance put on by the Orchestra was great. When the director of the orchestra entered the stage everyone in the audience gave him an applause as he starts to greet the audience, and talk about the performance. The projector behind the performers had videos, and drawings displayed that was turned into amination, and it brought the drawings to life while making the story more entertaining.…

This Stony Brook University performance was the first time I was exposed to any performance, so throughout the concert, there were many things that stuck out to me. The first thing that stuck out to me was the dress code. Upon arrival, I was surprised by dozens in very formal outfits. Once I was in the auditorium I did notice that there were indeed no phones, people talking or people eating. I saw the pride and excitement in some of the families faces as the performance began.…

For the Jazz Concert that I attended I saw the Nico Lembo Trio perform at Venkman’s in the Historic Fourth Ward of Atlanta. The Trio, consisting of drums, trombone, and electronic keyboard, had a sound that was heavily inspired by the “Cool Style” of Jazz in the early 1950’s with some hints of John Coltrane inspired Free Jazz elements. Throughout most of the performance the Trio played traditional instrumental jazz including classic songs by artists such as Miles Davis along with some original pieces by Nico himself. Although mostly instrumental the band brought a vocalist on stage for a select number of songs.…

I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy it or not. As soon as the first song played, titled “Miss Fine” by Oliver Nelson I knew I was in for a good treat! As the concert progressed I began to associate a lot of things going on with the information that I had learned about in class, for example, the call and response and improvisation. One main object I did learn about in class and was very obvious for me at the concert was the mutes…

Walking into the auditorium, I immediately noticed that the atmosphere of the concert was completely different from that of the classical concert I attended weeks earlier. To begin with, it seemed like there was much more of an audience. Everyone seemed excited for the concert to start. As for myself, I was also excited because, on the very front of the program, it said that there was a guest artist that was going to perform with the ensemble. The performers wore more of a business casual look, some were a little more dressed up than others, but overall they looked very well dressed.…

Concert Report Two The concert performance given live that I have attended on Thursday April 20th, 2017 was an organ licentiate recital by Ian Guenette. It was held at the Redpath Hall, a building located on McTavish street. The Redpath Hall was first dedicated for a library building, but is now taken charge by the Schulich School of Music. The Hall is very charming with its high selling that contains thick dark brown carved wodden beams that covers the intire ceiling and gives warmth to the room.…

In the string section all the musician’s bows glide up and down, but no one is ever out of place. The brass and woodwinds produced clear intonation. The percussionists have to subtly double check the sound of their instruments before playing. Under the conductor, the entire orchestra operated very smoothly and produced beautiful music.
