Reflective Essay: A Classical Music Concert

Improved Essays
When thinking of a Classical music concert, the first thing that comes to mind is orchestra. That was not the case on the concert that I attended to. I was able to attend a small performance by a single musician from Juilliard 's school of performing arts. The musician performed works from notable composers such as: Robert Schumann, Leos Janacek and J.S Bach. The instrument of choice by the musician was a viola. The location was very discrete. I have been in school for over 6 months and I was not aware of that place existing. The small venue made the experience pleasant and enjoyable. I sat two tables away from the musician. This allowed me to listen to the musician play from a fair distant, without being overwhelmed by the loudness of the …show more content…
Firstly, the incorporation of minor chords that Bach was originally known for. When Bach began to play and write, it was for the purpose of the church. Since his pieces were for the church, they had a more ominous sound to them. Secondly, the musician was able to create a spacious exposition with the strings. The musician had clear skill when it came to this. At a point during the piece, the musician made it sound as if there were two instruments playing at once. One major difference from studying Bach in class and attending to a live performance would be the use of modes. Throughout the class, as we studied Bach, we went in depth to his use of major mode. It was to my surprised -- to have to sit and listen to music in a minor mode. In my personal taste, to listen to a single instrument would be best in major mode. If one is to listen to a piece in minor mode, but it were to have a complete assemble, then the musicians could play with the music to give it a lively sound. In contradiction, the single musician created a very minor mode to the point that it sounded as if it was dissonant or as if the musician does not know how to play the music. Furthermore, the musician used cadenza. Towards the end of the Bach piece, she kept the crown hanging. As I looked around, I could see the confusion in people 's faces. The musician kept a minor tangent playing over and over. Eventually it it ended and the people around me, more specifically my friends, were caught unsuspectingly as the musician bounced to a major mode randomly. Classical music is not for everyone. I personally enjoy listening to it when played in major mode. Moreover, it is an experience for introduction to music. There is a great deal of appreciation to it once one begins to listen to it. It goes to show that this type of music specifically can be considered are, it is truly

I liked hearing about the events going on around the times in which these songs were created. Sometimes at “standard” concerts you don’t really understand a piece unless you go home and look up the meaning. There is also something nice about natural voices and musical instruments that haven’t been auto tuned or amplified. It gives the concert a more intimate feeling. I don’t know if I would give up my normal genres of music for classical style, but they do have their place and they can be quite…

This piece had a slow tempo, and it balanced all sections of the orchestra very well in regards to dynamics. The piece’s texture could best be categorized as polyphonic. This made the piece’s mood very reverent, but cheerfully so due to the melodies that were used. I liked this piece because it also balanced each section of the orchestra…

I attended one of the late night sessions which began around 11pm. The featured musician that was going to play was Josh Bruneau. After some research I found that Josh Bruneau is a fairly new jazz musician.…

The pieces met my expectation, because the tone of it was very interesting especially on how it started and how it progressed during the play. I enjoyed the music because it was inspirational like humanity accomplished a great feat, also how. Also the demeanor o the musicians looked very concentrated and as for the audience they appeared to be comfortable and interested. This effected my impression of the music because the audience weren’t reacting with the tone of the music which made in confusing for myself on how to react. I would attend the concert again because it is interesting to hear and it’s a piece of history that many individuals do not appreciate and take their time to listen to something classic and beautiful the roots of music.…

The Fall Concert took place at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School on October 13, 2016 for the grand reopening of the auditorium that was renovated during the summer. Concert Choir, Liturgical Choir, Concert Band, Eagle Pride, Phoenix, and Vega performed on this brand new stage to celebrate this wonderful event and it would become one of the most important events in the history of CJ. Since I am a member of the Concert Choir, I was really lucky to participate in the Fall Concert and saw that first glance of the new auditorium. It is really beautiful and I believe that it really represents CJ as a whole in the Dayton area and all those who support CJ. On the night of the concert, we performed five pieces as a group including the “United…

Michael Marissen, a music historian and writer, states in his book, Lutheranism, Anti-Judaism, and Bach’s St. John Passion, that during his time in Leipzig, “It was Bach’s job as Cantor at the St. Thomas School of Leipzig to be a musical preacher for the city’s main churches” (Marissen, 7). To deliver his spiritual messages in the clearest form, it was furthermore Bach’s duty to structure his music in such a way that allowed its message to also make a subconscious impact as well. However, it has been the subject of a longstanding debate as to what those subconscious messages were meant to be. One may argue that the same Passion previously analyzed, the St. John Passion, extends a negative view toward the Jewish population at the time. He proclaims…

The emotions expressed by not only the music but by how the musicians looked while playing these pieces made me believe that this show meant a lot to them because they would sway to the music when they weren’t playing. It had my emotions spiral out of control because some of the music was happy then it turned sad in an instance, then it would go right back to something whimsical. It’s not the typical kind of music that I would listen to daily but I am happy that I got to attend this event and hear something that I wouldn’t normally.…
