Behavioural Therapy Approach
Behavioural therapy focuses on emphasizing desirable behaviours and getting away with unwanted or flawed ones. It is believed that behaviour can be shaped and learned through interaction with the environment. There are two main concepts of Behaviour Therapy and they are classical conditioning and operant conditioning (as cited in Cherry, 2016).
Classical Conditioning
Classical Conditioning associates learning by pairing; to create a connection between an unconditioned stimulus that already brings about a particular response (i.e. salivation) with a new (conditioned) stimulus, so that the new stimulus brings about the same response (as cited in McLeod, 2013).
For a classical conditioning to work, a neutral stimulus

We tend to make a connection between a certain behaviour and a consequence be it a reinforcement or a punishment. These can be applied to either increase or decrease in the recurrence of a behaviour.
Behaviours followed by reinforcement are more likely to take place again in the future and there are two types of reinforcement: positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcements work by presenting something pleasant to the client as a result of accepted behaviour. For instance, receiving praises for a job well done, compliments by the bosses and rewards for achieving a certain target. As for negative reinforces, it is to remove something unpleasant from the client as a result of accepted behaviour. For instance, Mary does not need to do wash the dishes when she scores ‘As’ for her exams. The act of not doing the dishes is the unpleasantness that is removed for her scoring

In this procedure, we train the client to relax through a prescribed breathing exercise and Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), a deep muscle relaxation technique. PMR covers most parts of the body; eyes, mouth, chin, shoulder, chest, arms and legs. It is advisable to do together with the client as a form of demonstration at the beginning and with repetition of sessions, it helps our client to feel more comfortable doing it. This process is very critical as our client is required to have a relaxed state of mind in order to work against anxiety which is to follow in the next part. Client are not to move to step 2 if they have not learned how to attain a relaxed state of

In order to help my roommate lose enough weight to make the football team, there are several steps of operant conditioning that must be followed. First, I must devise a behavior modification plan for my roommate that will motivate him to want to keep progressing toward his goal. In order to make sure that this plan is effective in continuous and steady weight loss, I will use operant conditioning and the schedules of reinforcement to motivate him. I will need to measure his progress or weight loss through exercise. Through behavior modification, positive reinforcement and schedules of reinforcement, I will be able to help my roommate meet his ideal weight goal in order to make the football team.…

A positive reinforcer is when an individual does something and as a result something favorable happens. On the other hand, a negative reinforcer is when someone does something but as a result something negative happens. As a result, individuals are more likely to preform actions again that result in a positive outcome as opposed to actions with a negative outcome. This lecture was very informative and taught me a lot about…

In Operant Conditioning some factual points that stood out to me were two-forms of positive and negative reinforcement and punishment. With the use of positive and negative reinforcement to increase or decrease a behavior could be rewarding in molding behaviors in most cases. With the use of operant conditioning, this could also be a great tool to use outside of the classroom. (Positive reinforcement) If a Childs (Behavior) is good during class (Consequence) a parent could praise them on it and treat them out, etc., for such good behavior at school and then (future behavior) the child would continue their progress of behaving in class.…

Punishment verses Rewards The use of positive reinforcement has a much better outcome than if punishment were to be used, This was the idea of B.F. Skinner, a well-known psychologist from the 1970’s who enlightened the world with his behavioral techniques. Skinner believed that the use of positive reinforcement helped to shape a beings behavior verses punishment. He proved his theory when he trained his rats to push a lever by frequent and scheduled rewards and birds to peck plates using his positive reinforcement ideas. He wanted to take his knowledge of positive reinforcement and apply it to mankind and to improve mankind’s behavior and learning technique.…

Outline and evaluate one learning approach One learning approach in psychology is the behaviourist approach. The main assumptions of behaviourism are that behaviour is a response to a stimulus and that what we do is determined by environment. Behaviourists also assume that learning processes are common to all species – meaning that there is little difference between humans and animals as well as believing that all complex behaviour is the result of learning through interaction and that people are only born with a small amount of reflexes. Two processes are used in behaviourism to explain how people learn – classical conditioning and operant conditioning.…

Reinforcement is meant to increase a behavior. Therefore, positive reinforcement is presenting an appealing scenario immediately after a behavior in order to increase the likelihood of its reoccurrence. An example of this would be giving some ice cream to a child after they put their dishes in the sink without being asked. Negative reinforcement is taking away an unappealing scenario immediately after a behavior in order to increase the likelihood of its reoccurrence. An example of this type of reinforcement would be a student not having to complete a homework assignment after earning a perfect score on a quiz covering the same material.…
