Classic Heroes

There are many who object to the sudden diversification of heroes. These readers view the reimagining of classic heroes as travesties against the characters they know and love. Classic heroes such as Spiderman, Captain America, and Thor have been popular for years and with their popularity, these heroes have become associated with certain aspects and appearances. Many fans would argue that a superhero character wouldn’t be considered the same without their classic characteristics. In order to be the heroes, fans know these iconic heroes need to be exactly the way they were when they first appeared. This is perhaps the reason why many comic book characters consistently retain the same appearance. It’s true that these heroes are known to look and act a certain way but, is it really necessary to keep them that way. Appearances and actions are mutually exclusive. Is Superman a hero because he is a white male? Is Batman? How about Captain America or Spiderman? No, they’re heroes because of what they stand for and because the ways they show what they stand for. Despite what those heroes looked like fans have still found ways to connect with them. This connection is due to the fact that narratives of many of superheroes have been so powerful that it was able to transcend ethnic and gender limitations. This allowed fans of all backgrounds to embrace the embodiment of the ideals represented by these characters despite the fact that many of the heroes were portrayed as stereotypical white men (Smith). Comics now have a chance to expand the impact these characters have to a personal level by altering a few aspects. These changes may be cosmetic or they may be preferential regardless of what they are specifically these changes will ultimately result in a new audience feeling the same inspiration that past generations had felt before
