Being nominated as class president is a leadership position required the votes over 400 people but moreover, needed trust, reliability, and dedication from an individual. Therefore, from the beginning, I was set on meeting those trajectories. I strategically planned out small milestones and ways to accomplish them. I learned from my student government career that it starts off with just a small step to fall deeply in love with something that I spent most of my life with. Norman Davis’ book , the Black Quarterback Syndrome class presentation heighten some awareness in the way organizations conducted their business in a different era. Today, some pioneers tend to experience similar behavior. In the interest of preventing Davis’ (2010) definition of the black quarterback syndrome for pioneers, organizations need to promote diversity. For the purpose to include many people who are different from one another, without taking into account the multitude of problems that diversity brings (Thatcher, Jehn & Zanutto, 2003). Having personally experience some BQS, with evidence from my former supervisor along with some internal feelings, I come to believe that today there are many improvements in the workforce.…

I would describe my personality as approachable, light hearted, and positive. I believe that, if asked, my colleagues and supervisor would say the same about me. I have worked with diverse groups of people most of my career, including my time in University. I am most comfortable, and happy, in this type of environment because it offers me unique learning opportunities. I have found, in the past, that I work well in an individually driven environment; however, I can certainly be productive in a team based setting as well.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

It was April 15th, 2013 and I was the 15-year-old, innocent sophomore with a perfect record, sitting in the principal’s office waiting for my punishment.
