I all of my years at the Wheatley school I have yet to encounter a student with Luke’s interest in current events and their links to history. To me, Luke stands out as an exceptional social studies student and additionally as a fabulous and polite young man who does not take anything for granted.
The current 12-grade class is the most impressive class that I have encountered during my time at Wheatley. Five years earlier I taught 65 of the 8th-grade students which was half of the class. For my 1st period class, per their request, I hosted a dance party every Friday before the 1st bell. It was a great success in engaging and loosening up the students for this early morning class. This is where I first met Luke. He was not part of my class but came to dance and to talk history and politics with his peers and me. He also has a quick witted sense of humor which is often on display as when in my 12th grade AP Macroeconomics class I asked what commodity Florida specialized in and he answered ‘failed elections”. Another of Luke’s strengths is his perseverance and the determination he shows in the difficult classes where his hard work is what makes the difference. Toward the end of his 11th grade his 12th-grade schedule was not coming together as he had hoped. He wanted to take AP Government and AP macro the only two AP social studies classes he had not taken. Unfortunately to schedule these two classes he would have to give up band and Italian, which are both classes that he had taken since 7th grade. I think he showed his true mettle by sticking with these classes and finishing what he started in lieu of yet another AP class. Needless to say, Luke’s Italian teacher was very pleased, as he is a powerhouse in her class as
