• What steps did you take, and when, to prepare for the class session? What additional steps if any, do you in retrospect wish you’d taken?
To prepare for my facilitation, I carefully assigned readings I thought would be useful/helpful to students who had and had not seen a lot of Disney movies. Throughout the semester, I set aside time to watch a few Disney movies I hadn’t seen, as well as re-watched movies I hadn’t seen since I was a kid. I felt it was important to watch as many Disney movies as possible and do as much reading on Disney movies as possible, so I could understand classmates’ comments and know what movie/scene they were talking about. Also, to prepare for this class session, I asked my roommates …show more content…
I mainly showed it because I thought it was a somewhat humorous way to begin talking about how women have been portrayed in Disney movies. I would leave this video out in the future because it would allow for a few more minutes of great discussion! I also would leave it out in the future because of a comment a classmate made that in the video, it was the older films of Disney, which was true. In the future, I’d like to direct more time to thinking and examining how Disney movies have changed over time. Especially for discussions like our conversation about Frozen and how, in some ways, it appears much better for stereotypes, but, several negative messages are still present in the film (which I hope to really start digging into in my final paper). Another change I would have made would have been to change a few discussion questions to further the conversation, but I say this after my facilitation because after the points the classmates brought up, there’s more topics I wish I dug into. Another change I would make in the future would be to have a timer up on the big screen so that everyone could see how much more time they had for small group discussion. I had a timer on my phone and would alert the class to wrap up their last thoughts, but often let the class talk for another minute or so (mainly because I was very interested in what classmates were talking about and I felt it was …show more content…
I’m sure a few of these I previously mentioned in this reflection, when referring to the discussion on Frozen and a few other topics. Another idea that I’m finding myself thinking about still are the problematic ways Disney movies tend to portray other cultures, and leave out their history, and quite often, result in generalizing, especially the movie Aladdin. The movie doesn’t state where it takes place, but people often generalize it to the middle east area (as all the same). In addition, the main thing that evolved after my discussion relates to race and culture in Disney movies. Almost all Disney movies display a white focused movie, or show other races, like the movie Pocahontas. This movie is continuing to be more problematic because it’s supposed to show history, but leaves all the important/crucial history out and have several problems within the film. With my contradiction, I’m now more concerned about Disney movies, because it appears there are two different kinds of Disney movies, one only displays white culture, and the other movies generalize other culture and leave out important points. This is problematic to me be, because it makes me think that children can either see white in Disney movies (for the most part) or, children can watch movies with other cultures, that are misleading and often leave children with the wrong impressions/views without them realizing it. My hope is that explaining/talking to children about
