Class Disciplinement In The Classroom

After having interviewed a middle grade teacher for a description on how class discipline is addressed in the classroom and also in the entire school, the answers I received impressed me a lot since the strategies used are pretty much similar to the ones used by Educational Psychologists. In today’s world it is very important for a teacher to understand that not all students are the same, for this reason it is even more important that each and every teacher to apply as many ideas as Educational Psychologist do. During the interview there were many questions asked about the class discipline strategies used by the teacher, the first one that was addressed was that the teacher first tries to understand the situation of the child personal life. …show more content…
Teacher mentioned that she always tries to avoid threatening the child about something that will be done if they don’t do what they are asked to. For example, if the entire class will have an end of the school year field trip and the teacher constantly tell the child that if they continue to misbehave they will not be going to the trip, this will only make the situation worse. The student will think that they will not be allowed to attend the trip because of misconduct, so the student will create anger against the teacher and will continue giving her a hard time throughout the rest of the year. According to Thomas Gordon avoiding threats will only initiate a never ending argument between the student and the teacher (Snowman, McCown, Biehler, 2009, p. 460). Another fact stated by Gordon is that the student may actually gain prestige by provoking the teacher successfully. It is always important to never confront a student in front of the entire class, always settle extreme differences in private or even maybe schedule a parent conference to address the behavior to the …show more content…
When the teacher has tried many different strategies to figure out what is causing the problem, it is always best to seek for help. According to the interviewed teacher, there are some situations where the teacher has assumed incorrectly about having the response of why the child is misbehaving and this may lead into a misunderstanding between the student and the teacher. According to Metzger, teachers must take the time to ask students for an explanation of the situation. Even though the teacher might be exhausted of figuring out ways to discipline the student and nothing seems to work, Metzger says never give up and always try to get to the bottom of the reason why the child might be behaving a certain way. Another great advice from Metzger is to always get the parents involved in the situation with the student. For example, in a situation described in the textbook there is a child who is constantly interrupting classroom lessons, the teacher advises the student that if the behavior continues a parents meeting will be scheduled. After the meeting with the parents, the teacher sees a great improvement in the child’s
