Today is Friday January 13th, 1893. In Long Valley, California, Clark Ashton Smith has been born to Timeus Smith of England, and his wife Fanny Smith of the Mid- west. Clark was born in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Clark Ashton Smith was born in the home of his grandparents, Hiram and Harriet Gaylord, in Long Valley, just off the Auburn-Folsom Road. He is the first born to Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
The Life of Clark Ashton Smith
As a child, Clark kept to himself, he enjoyed being isolated. He began writing at the age of eleven, but mostly “fairy tales” and “adventure novels”. He had started to read books and stories by Thomas Lovell Beddoes, William Beckford, and of Course Edgar Allen Poe. His most greatly influence is said to be H.P. Lovecraft.
Clark only went to public district school for a few years, but then attended Auburn’s grammar school for several years, but he didn’t finish it. He applied to the high school in Auburn and was accepted, but he decided against attending it. He then decided to educate himself by reading encyclopedias and dictionaries. He was also invited by Jack London to visit Beauty Ranch, but declined. Smith also declined Sterling’s invitation to revisit Carmel, Indiana. The reasoning for the declination of numerous invitations was a psychological drainage, so said a close from of Smith, Hal Rubin. Smith had feared that he had contracted tuberculosis while visiting Carmel the first time. Apparently Clark’s illnesses were a lot more than hypochondria, because tuberculosis had plagued him in some years to come. There was some psychological problem within Smith, he was a victim of depression and anxiety, and Sterling wanted to place Clark in a Sanitarium. Smith was very prone to having nightmares as a child, and he had become captivated with the idea of
