The myth is that society has enforced a set of standards for boys and men to strive to achieve on a daily basis. This “Guy Code” consists of being strong, aggressive, powerful and non-emotional. If emotion is shown or a sensitive side the risk is that of being made fun of or ostracized by their peers, friends, fathers, brothers and teachers. Being humiliated even in front of others. If boys don’t man up, then they are not a man and looked down upon.…

One of the most dominant ideologies in contemporary societies, is that women are more emotional than men, thus the notions of the "emotional woman" and the "unemotional man". Butler (1990) and Connell (1995) argues that femininity and masculinity are a matter of performance in nature, meaning that they are both subjects to heterosexual norms that are created and imposed upon us through education and social relationships. Due to gender emotions behaviour being socially constructed and the fact that society changes over time, it is fair to say that the way men and women expressed their feelings in the past might not be the same as it is today. The aim of this essay will therefore be firstly to discuss the gender differences in the expression…

In the past women changed their last name from their father’s last name to their husband’s last name when they got married. Women changed their last name to show a change in ownership from one male, the father, to another, the new husband. Men did not change their last names because they were viewed as the owners. Throughout history women were viewed as property rather than as individuals. In today’s society many women still change their last names when they get married, however it is not necessarily because they are being “traded” as property.…

The False Bravado of Men Bret Harte’s 1868 story “The Luck of Roaring Camp” illustrates how those who may act tough, still care on the inside. Harte’s story is depicting the lives of those who moved to mining camps in California during the Gold Rush. The majority of those who moved to the mining camps were men of rough character, occasionally there was a woman. The bravado of these men is what made the camps seem like a harsh place to be. The men all acted like they were tough and they wanted to be intimidating so that nobody would bother them.…

Gets tiring seeing our gender being repeatedly used as props and displaced as such. That’s why I hope one day our intellect is recognized before our appearance. I hope one-day people dissociate that appearance and women go hand and hand because they don’t. I hope that in the future I wont come across another ridiculous post that tell us we shouldn’t act a certain because guys don’t find it appealing. Our actions shouldn’t be validated by the opinion of men and no that doesn’t make me a “men hater”; I just believe every person has the right to be who ever they are without anyone telling them how to act.…

Toughen Up Barbara Ehrenreich’s short essay "What I’ve Learned from men" first emerged in Ms. Magazine, an American liberal feminist publication. In this essay Ehrenreich aims to convince her audience that women must raise from oppression, take credit for what they deserve, and most importantly, “toughen up.” “But now, at mid-life, I am willing to admit that there are some real and useful things to learn from men. Not from all men- in fact, we may have the most to learn from some of the men we like the least.…

In the movie, “Of Mice and Men” Weed was very different than the one in the novel. First and foremost, the lady in the red dress chased Lennie and George; the book did not portray it that way. The men were also chasing Lennie and George. I believe the director chose to do it this way because it brings action, and it also makes it more interesting it. Also it is the beginning of the story, so he possibly may have wanted to add an attention grabber to draw you in.…
