Clarence: A Narrative Fiction

“Grab it!” I turned around in a rapid response, knowing that Clarence would not yell unless it was of extreme importance. Clarence was the kind of person you went for help with homework or a lecture, he was very intelligent and occasionally obnoxious. At the time, I could not say that I was as smart as he, or even mature, but I knew how to draw conclusions. On the other hand, Duff could not put two and two together.

Regardless, we were all surrounded in a strange, abnormally grassy land. Not only was it humid, but I felt something strange about the environment. I did as Clarence said and grabbed the yellow object. Clarence took it straight out of my hand and observed it carefully, “this is an insect trapped in amber. It’s not completely hardened, meaning that it’s not old.” Duff could not look more stupid in that moment when he asked, “why does that even matter, dude?” This I could answer, “It’s a fossil. We learned about them just yesterday, remember?”

More specifically, when. He told us both we were in the Jurassic Era, and there were dinosaurs nearby. This was understood by both Duff and I when we found a giant footprint of what could only be a dinosaur’s. Clarence elaborated more on it saying, “that’s an Allosaurus’ footprint... it eats meat. Sienna, could you give me that permineralized fossil?” Him being the expert, I grabbed what seemed to be the most beautiful, flat shell I’ve ever seen and placed it in his

In Joan Didion’s excerpt ‘The Promise of the Prison’, from The People and Promises of California, Didion talks about California and the hopes residents were instilled by the building of prisons. The prisons being built were going to provide protection and a substantial amount of job opportunities for residents. Didion mentioned that by the year 2000 California had over “33 penitentiaries and 162,000 inmates, the largest in the western hemisphere.” This number has increased since then not just in California but all over the United States; this accounts for twenty-two percent of the world’s prison population. California’s prisons are overpopulated and exceed the expected capacity of inmates that should be housed.…

Reflecting on the college application process, I noticed that the college essays were stressed very highly, but all the prompts ask for the same thing. Whether they are asking for an eventful moment, your passion, a hobby, or a chosen outsourced prompt, many students seem to convey the same messages in their essays. To get around this, one must ask a more inconspicuous prompt where the student’s character shows through their unique ideas. A prompt that is universal, conveys a meaning, and is always answered uniquely must ask for a narrative: Write a creative story. Walking through the woods one night, Agatha Johansson could not wait to arrive at her friend’s house.…

In this following paper I will discuss my court visits on September 30th and October 19th at the Lancaster Court House. The first hearing I saw was an estate hearing in courtroom six on the third floor with Judge Jay J Hoberg. The hearing was only an about an hour long but to me it was very informative. As I mentioned earlier it was an estate hearing for a petition to have will moved to New Jersey, there was a jurisdiction error. There was no defendant, the party in contradiction of a claim that is brought (pg. 262), at the hearing there was only a plaintiff, the party who initiates the claim (pg. 265).…

In novels, a character's character can be depicted through the author's use of literary techniques. Their personality, purpose, and description all make up a character and help the audience understand why the author chose this particular character incorporate in their writing. In the excerpt from the novel, Belinda, the complex character of Clarence Hervey is depicted through the authors use of a judgmental tone, third person limited point of view and unpleased language. Edgeworth knows the complexity of Clarence Hervey’s character so we see her using a judgmental tone throughout this excerpt.…

The Little Prisoner by Jane Elliott This book was a powerful if not over powering story of a child whose step father abused her on every level of abuse; physical, mental, sexual, and emotional. The author of this book Jane, a pseudonym for the actual child, made the book come full circle. It started in the court room and was brought back to that pivotal moment when she is forced to face her attacker as an adult. It shows the reader the reaction of someone who clearly has no understanding the effects the child abuse Jane endured because the officer treated her like she was overreacting.…
