Karl Marx is well known for being one of the most influential socialist thinkers of our time. Born on May 5, 1818 in Prussia (modern day Trier, Germany), Marx grew up in a well off family with 8 siblings. His parents Heinrich and Henrietta Marx each had long lines of rabbinical Jewish ancestry. However, after an anti-Semitic law that banned Jews from higher society, the Marx’s involuntarily converted to Christianity – even though Karl Marx himself became an atheist later in life. Marx is credited with being the creator and/or leader of many political and social concepts such as Marxism, Bourgeoisie and Proletariat, capitalism, communism, and socialism. He is also widely known for some of his writings like The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital.

Barton is one of the most honored women in US history; her devotion and humanitarianism paved way for many others. Clara Barton, born December 25, 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts, spent most of her life helping others. She became one of few female teachers during a time when the profession was heavily male dominated. Barton also worked for the federal government and provided supplies and personal support to soldiers during the Civil War. In addition to these accomplishments, Clara Barton is particularly known for founding The American Red Cross. In 1881, at the age of 60, Barton lobbied for the American branch of the Red Cross and ran the organization for 23 years. “I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them”. This quote by Barton demonstrates her dedication and patriotism to her country. Even though she wasn’t able to fight in the war, she still made every effort to contribute to the cause. His infidelity and disregard for women were often depicted in his artwork. Even in some of his most famous works, it’s obvious Pablo Picasso has some type of contempt towards women. In Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, the painting features 5 prostitutes in a brothel – something Picasso was all too familiar with. The faces of many of the women he drew or painted were often blank or grotesque. Some of his other pieces that conveyed a misogynistic tone include Nude Woman in a Red Armchair and Portrait of Dora Maar. Pablo Picasso would disagree with Karl Marx’s views because unlike Marx, Picasso did not truly value women. “There are only two types of women – goddesses or doormats”.
