The Iroquois Confederacy is made up of six tribes Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora. Originally the Tuscarora's were not a part of the Iroquois Confederacy. Deganawida is said to have went to all five original tribes along with Chief Hiawatha of the Mohawks and made peace between those tribes. After that being done the clan mothers selected fifty chiefs who made up the council. Clan Mothers had a big part in the tribes. The clan mother's position was hereditary. The clan mother was responsible for many things like naming everyone in the tribe; she can nominate and can remove the chief, arrange marriages and counsel members of the tribe are some of her roles.
