In Claire's community, everything is perfect, there are no animals or weather and everyone is assigned a job when they are a twelve. At her ceremony of twelve, Claire is assigned birthmother and has her first baby at fourteen. But, something goes wrong and Claire is reassigned to the fish hatchery. Upon leaving the birthing unit, a worker there accidentally tells her that the baby she had is in fact, a boy. No mother is allowed to see their baby, as it will be reassigned to another couple who has applied for one. Claire cannot forget she has a baby boy, so she decides to snoop around in the nurturing center in hopes to find him. Later, she discovered he is referred to as thirty-six. However, she notices that no one shows affection like her …show more content…
Claire realized that once assigned to the hatchery, she never started to take the pills. Without the pills, emotions flow freely and people are able to see color. When Claire realizes she truly loves her child, the community plans to end his life. He is easily upset and couldn't fall asleep. Meanwhile, a boy named Jonas has kidnaped him and plans to take the baby to elsewhere. Claire finds herself getting on a boat in search of him. Unfortunately, there is a storm and Claire ends up in a village in the middle of multiple cliffs. A crippled boy named Einar says he will teach her to scale them, so she can reach her son. Einar tells Claire that it wasn't the climb that crippled him, it was what was at the end (Lowry 212). A man called Trademaster is at the top, and Claire must trade something of hers to find her son. When she meets the Trademaster, he wants her youth in trade for helping her find her child. Suddenly, Claire is an old woman with little time left, but she is in the village with Jonas and her son, Gabe. Soon, Claire becomes very sick and tells Jonas that she is Gabe's mother and traded her youth to Trademaster. Gabe must find him, and defeat him, but he tells himself that he can't kill anyone, because that's not who he
