Clab Disinfections

In this study, they examined the impact of routine use of a disinfection cap for catheter hub decontamination in hematology–oncology patients at a tertiary cancer center in New York. They used a simple hypothesis by saying “that this intervention (alcohol impregnated caps) led to a decrease in the rates of these outcomes.” One of the most prevalent healthcare-associated infections are Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) within many different hospital units, resulting in increased lengths of stay, increased healthcare costs, and higher mortality rates. Evidence that CLABSIs are largely preventable has created opportunities for healthcare organizations to implement evidence-based bloodstream infection prevention practices

Research Question: How will education on the importance and use of the nurse-driven indwelling urinary catheter removal protocol affect knowledge of nurses taking care of patients with urinary catheters and the CAUTI rates in an acute care hospital in North Carolina ? Project Significance: An indwelling catheter removal protocol is a recommended tool and is part of a bundle used to prevent CAUTI. The lack of knowledge of its use and its importance may be directly related to high CAUTI rates O Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) can be reasonably prevented with the application of evidence-based prevention strategies (Institute for Healthcare Improvement, 2011, CDC, 2015)…

Nice post Dana! As we know, prevention is better than cure, and many UTI's can be prevented if we didn't use so many indwelling urinary catheters. The most common hospital-acquired infection is urinary tract infection (UTI), which accounts for almost 40% of all nosocomial infections (Saint, 2008). Most hospital-acquired UTIs are associated with urinary catheters, a commonly used device among hospitalized patients (Saint,2008). Urinary catheterization occurs in 25% of patient hospitalization, but other methods of prevention should be assessed first (Saint, 2008).…

Joint Commission and CAUTI Prevention Healthcare is in the midst of a paradigm shift in which the focus has transitioned away from patient volume towards patient quality and safety. It is the responsibility of healthcare leaders and professionals to prioritize safety and quality initiatives and to adapt to the evolving healthcare systems (Moran, Harris & Valenta, 2016). To pledge their commitment to quality, healthcare organizations seek accreditation from regulatory bodies that focus on improving safety, efficiency and better outcomes (Kelly, 2014). Accreditation is a formal process that “assesses and recognizes that a healthcare organization meets applicable predetermined and published standards” (Kelly, 2014, p. ).…

As a future adult/gerontology nurse practitioner (AGNP), my role will be focusing on helping patients to manage chronic illnesses, illness prevention, and health promotion. In addition, The AGNP collaborate with other health care providers such as physicians and specialist to better manage and treat patient illness. The problem I am really interested in researching is catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) in hospitalized patients. Working as a registered nurse in a medical/surgical unit I have been exposed to different patients with indwelling Foley catheters and other requiring placement of the Foley catheter for various reasons. However, research has found that many patients tend to be at risk of unnecessary catheterization and are also at a greater risk of both infectious and non-infectious complications from the procedure (Carter, Reitmeier, & Goodloe, 2014).…

Infections are a common risk factor for any patient in the hospital. The occurrence of an infection is an even greater concern when the patient receives an invasive procedure, such as placement of a Central Venous Access Device. With proper technique and licensed staff placing a central venous access device, the risk for complications can be minimized. Champions for Central Line Care is a journal that explains “the team approach for reducing CLABSIs. (Reed, Brock, & Anderson, 2014, p. 40)” CLABSI can be defined as a Central Line-Associated Blood Stream Infection (Giddens, 2014, p. 469).…

Central line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI's) are one of the most deadly healthcare associated infections (HAI's). Approximately 12-25% of CLABSI's result in death and the average cost per case is about $26,000. In recent years, between 2001 and 2009, CLABSI incidences have decreased from 43,000 to 18,000. This has saved the health care industry 3-6,000 lives and approximately $414 million in ICU's in 2009 alone. To this day, many hospitals are now reporting zero CLABSI's.…

According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 in 25 people admitted to the hospital will also suffer from a nosocomial, or hospital acquired infection (CDC, 2015). That number totals to 1.7million people a year, of that, catheter-associated urinary tract infections account for 35% and result in 8,205 deaths (AHRQ, 2015). These infections cost hospitals $565 million dollars each year and the majority of them can be prevented (AHRQ, 2015). Due to the unnecessary money that is spent treating this…

Health care-acquired infection (HCAI) is a foremost problem for patient safety and its surveillance. Prevention of HCAI has got to be the first main concern for settings and institutions dedicated to making health care safer. The impact of HCAI implies extended hospital stay, long-term disability, increased antimicrobials resistance of microorganisms, massive extra economic load, high expenses for patients and their families, and excess mortalities ( Boyce J., 2009). In the USA, 10%, or 2 million, patients a year become infected (HCAI), with the annual cost ranging from $4.5 billion to $11 billion. The most frequent type of infection hospital-wide is urinary tract infection (36%), followed by surgical site infection (20%), and bloodstream infection and pneumonia (both 11%)(World Health Organization, 2009).…
