Hybrid Assignment 5 – We Need to Talk
Phillip
This is what I will advise Phillip, a supervisor, who reported to me that many employees are complaining about Sally’s hygiene: “Phillip, I know this is a difficult situation to deal with, however we have a dress code policy that states that each employee’s dress, grooming, and personal hygiene should be appropriate to the work situation. It requires employees to have an appropriate, well-groomed appearance. As you know the reason we have this policy in place are (1) to present a professional or identifiable appearance for customers, suppliers, and the public; (2) to promote a positive working environment and limit distractions caused by outrageous, provocative, or inappropriate dress; and

I would recommend that you meet with her privately in the conference room at the end of the day (rather than doing it earlier on, since she’d then probably feel self-conscious the whole rest of the day). You have to also consider emotional issues. As you know this is a very sensitive topic so be very polite. Finally, prepare yourself mentally; writing down what you are going to say will help tremendously.

Convey Positive Intent
“Phillip during the convey positive intent step, you have to briefly state what you would like to discuss and why. Remember you motivation is to make an improvement and not to blame Sally. I would suggest saying something along these lines to her, “Sally thank you for taking the time to meet with me. You are a very valuable team member. I would like to discuss our dress code/personal hygiene policy because as you know each employee is a representative of the organization and lately you have not been meeting the dress code expectations.”

Link her lack of personal grooming to the impact it has not only her coworkers but also the business. You can state one or two consequences that can happen if she does not make any changes. I would suggest telling her the following, “Sally, you are a representative of the company. When you do not present a well-groomed appearance you are portraying a negative impression of not only yourself, but also the company. Having an unpleasant odor makes it hard for others to work around you. As you can see personal hygiene is very important.

Ask the other person to respond
“The fifth step is allowing Sally to respond back. Listen to what she has to say without interrupting. Phillip you can ask her open-ended questions to better understand the situation such as, “What is you view of this situation?” or “Is there anything that you want to me?” Also remember to keep the focus on the topic and be open to receive feedback from Sally.

On this side, it is argued that to restrict exposed skin is demeaning to students and teachers alike as it suggests a sexualization which they argue should be punished instead. Freedom of clothing does not disrupt a healthy learning environment and would train students to grow into more open-minded adults who would be able to challenge and change similar unfairness in the workplace. The analysis of the effectiveness of the policies cannot be objectively measured as there is no information from an educational system without such restrictive policies. Instead, as shown by the decline of uniforms, there has been a shift in the cultural ideologies to adopting the less conservative as…
