These officers are also the most visible law enforcement officials. Local law enforcement officials perform their sworn duties within cities, villages, and townships. Just like state and federal officers, these individuals are armed whether on or off duty; unlike state and federal officers, local law enforcement agencies protect the citizens and enforce the laws of the United States, their state government, and their local municipality within their assigned jurisdictions

(USMS, 2011) Along with protecting the Judges, attorneys, jurors, prisoners, support staff, and visitors within the federal courts, the USMS also has the mission of locating and apprehending federal fugitives, along with providing assistance to state and local authorities in the location and apprehension of the most dangerous fugitives. Each level deals with law enforcement activities, yet each activity has its own unique circumstances. At the local level, law enforcement personnel are the foremost agents of protecting and serving the citizens of the United States on a daily and highly visible basis. The state departments deal with enforcing state laws on the roads and causeways within the states’ jurisdiction, along with protecting the states property and assets. The federal government deals with the protection of federal assets, along with the investigation of federal crimes and support functions therein. Each agency also provides support and assistance to each other when needed. Because of the distinctive nature of the agency’s missions, the organization staffing, and operations are similar yet different. Each agency needs administrative staff along with financial and budgetary employees, depending on the mission of the agency, there are further needs for investigational personnel, forensics personnel, and correctional staff.
