There are social niceties that must be observed, and while there are variations depending on what area of the United States you live in, for the most part people value good manners, morals, and politeness when dealing with others. However, as Elijah Anderson’s book explains, there is a different set of rules for those who live in the inner city, and a different source of social capital, respect. Nothing is more important in the inner city than the concept of respect, and as Anderson explains a lot of the actions that seem foreign to those who live outside of the world of the inner city make sense when thought about in this context.…

In the short story, “If Thy Right Hand Offend Thee”, many characters including Luis Otero, Dr. Phillip Barnes, Senator Meissner, and Victor Navatelli made this one of the best I have ever read. The setting takes place in the near future of the United States. Dr. Barnes is the physician in charge for the Reenactment Center; where criminals are put through the ultimate virtual reenactment of their crime through their victim's eyes. The real possibility of the setting actually coming true in the future makes the story more intriguing. Dr. Barnes was visited by the Senator for her to decide whether or not the state should continue funding for his research.…

    P. Forni’s article on Why Civility is Necessary for Survival, highlights that civility is dwindling within our society. Consequently, we can experience this decline of civility firsthand during every day transactions from ordering coffee, driving or running errands. Individuals are less likely than ever to use courteous language such as “please” and “thank you.” Etiquette often seems to evade members of our society and is instead exchanged for rudeness. Therefore, with this notion in mind, calls for civil discourse aren’t necessary a plea for niceties.…

The answers to what is just or unjust vary from person to person, primarily based on their life experiences. According to the majority of the population it is what they personally feel is considered right or wrong. However these definitions do not satisfy the true meaning of what it means for something to be considered justice. Whether something can be seen as just or unjust relies upon whether it harms a person or a group, if it reinforces the beliefs of your society, or whether it has a positive or negative effect on the community.…
