Before Franklin Delano Roosevelt was inaugurated as President, more than 25% of the population was unemployed. The New Deal agencies gave these families a chance when they had no hope. One of those successful agencies was the CCC–Civilian Conservation Corps. Locally there is Clarkco State Park in Quitman, MS that was founded and built by the CCC. Currently there is the CCC Legacy that was founded to not let the history and purpose of the CCC die after it was disbanded in 1942. There is much to learn about the CCC, both past, present, and future. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) is one of the many alphabet soup agencies that President Franklin D. Roosevelt developed at the beginning of his term during the Great …show more content…
Clarkco State Park is one of eight original Mississippi state parks. It was built by the CCC Company 1437 in 1938 and the CCC men built four of the original cabins and two large picnic shelters that are still in use. They stayed in barracks in a camp along U.S. Hwy 45 in the park. There are many trails and activities to do at Clarkco; I personally walked every trail at Clarkco this past Christmas. One trail leads to the site of the CCC work camp. At the location of the CCC work camp, you can still find the rock and mortar walls of what used to be a Goldfish pond which was the centerpiece of the CCC camp. You can visit the multipurpose/visitor center building to look at a display of photos and information about the CCC in general and specifically on this camp that built Clarkco State Park. Clarkco has definitely expanded since the CCC first founded it. It now has 18 cabins and a water splash pad for the whole family to enjoy a day in the water. You can fish, stay in cabins, stay in the RV park, go camping, or take your children to the playground. None of this would have been possible if not for the conservation efforts of these young men that were employed into the CCC. This shows a local example of how the CCC impacted the United …show more content…
The CCC Legacy was founded in 2007 as a result of a merger between the Camp Roosevelt CCC Legacy Foundation and the National Association of CCC Alumni (NACCCA). It was founded to pass on this legacy of conservation to future generations and continue to promote and educate the public of all ages about the CCC. One can buy a membership into the CCC Legacy to help bring attention to the legacy of the CCC and conserving our world. Members help to educate the public on what the CCC stood and stands for and scout groups maintain public lands for future generations to enjoy. The members also have many meetings discussing different events, and they take tours of the parks around the area where they are meeting for that year. They built a commemorative wall during the time of the 75th and 80th anniversary of the CCC to honor those men that worked those nine years to build these parks to preserve the land and resources and is located in Edinburg, VA. At different parks, in many states are monuments and museums commemorating the work of the CCC in 1933-1942. This shows how the CCC is effecting the United States into the present and future, even after almost 76 years after it

In 1935, the idea to preserve the land around the Chilkoot Trail originated. During the same year, the Historic Sites Act created a movement to preserve places of cultural importance across the United States. In 1962, Skagway Historic District and White Pass National Historic Landmark received federal designation and “enabled local property owners to obtain state and Federal monies in the form of grants and loans to preserve their historic structures. The collection of historic objects by local residents in 1961 allowed for the opening of a new City Museum, and in 1969, the White Pass & Yukon Route railroad donated the original train depot and general office building to the National Park Foundation” (National Park Service KLGO History and Culture…

June twenty-seventh was the day that I had been anticipating before the start of summer vacation. I arrived to philly by bus, which was the first bus ride that I had ever taken alone. The rest of my crew members arrived and we made our way to Independence National Historic Park Headquarters. Toni, the park’s landscape architect, introduced herself to the crew.…

A multitude of federal acts were implemented during President Roosevelt's first one-hundred days of action, dating back from March 9th to June 16th, 1933. Of those many differing acts, President Roosevelt's favorite relief project was the Civilian Conservation Corps, otherwise referred to as CCC. The CCC was designed with intent to not only beautify America, but provide jobs for young unemployed men. Activities involved in the CCC include creation of camps in national parks, forests, and additional rural and wilderness locations across previously barren lands. The young men working in these locations were often from the cities, and would carry out tasks such as planting trees, construction reservoirs, aiding in the improvement of agricultural…

Maybe it was Junior Griffey, maybe it was the abundance of sequoias and pine trees, or maybe it was Mount Rainier. For a kid who grew up in North Dakota then Ohio, the Pacific Northwest was wild and different. Sequim presents a great opportunity to work with a variety of citizens in one of the most picturesque locations in America. Having access to the sound, the mountains, and all of the outdoor recreation options available makes the position in Sequim even more appealing. Additionally, as a local government employee in Ohio then North Carolina I have observed competing views of the role of government in citizen’s lives.…

There are multiple reasons participating in the Brush Creek Ranch program would be beneficial. I would like to be given an opportunity to visit an area different from the city where stars can be seen and birds can be heard. Living in the city, the sky is fogged with pollution and songs of nature are blocked by noisy cars. My visit to Vermont expanded my love for science and I wish to learn more. While in Vermont not only did I enjoy the energetic birds, colorful trees and beautiful oblique mountains--but I learned scientific context.…

The organization reports a worldwide membership of over 1.5 million,(Salvation army, 2014) consisting of soldiers, officers and adherents known as Salvationists. Its founders Catherine and William Booth sought to bring salvation to the poor, destitute and hungry by meeting both their "physical and spiritual needs". It is present in 127 countries, (The Salvation Army, 2015) running charity shops, operating shelters for the homeless, and providing personal hygiene product (Taiz, 2001) and disaster relief and humanitarian aid to developing countries (Gariepy, Henry,2009). What I reflect on about Salvation Army stores (Thrift Shops) is that these stores (worldwide) are fully operated by The Salvation Army, the proceeds go directly into the charitable work.…
