The American Civil War is one of the most momentous and controversial periods in American history. America Civil War during the years 1861-1865 was resulted in the social, political, and economic differences that can be traced to the first colonies and are exemplified in the conflict between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. These differences expanded over time to result in the divided country of the 1860's. At the time of the Civil War, the abolitionists had many conflicts with South. The conflicts between the Northern and Southern United States were state's rights versus federal authority, industrialization and agriculture, and urbanization and plantation. They felt that the states should still have the right to decide if they were willing to accept certain federal acts. This resulted in the idea of nullification, whereby the states would have the right to rule federal acts unconstitutional. The federal government denied states this right. When nullification would not work and states felt that they were no longer respected, they moved towards secession. As America began to expand, first with the lands gained from the Louisiana Purchase and later with the American Mexican war, the debate over whether new states entering the union should be slave or free was a heated one. For example, the Missouri Comprise passed in 1820 drew an imaginary line across the territory acquired through the Louisiana Purchase at 36o 30' latitude. Land below this imaginary line would be slave territory; land above it would be free. Also, American Mexican war complicated American politics by making slavery a central issue in national life, exacerbated the division between parties which were Democrats and Whigs, and intensified the conflict between abolitionists and proslavery forces. The conflict on slavery was worsen and was the reason of America Civil War. Last, a fundamental economic difference existed between the country's northern and southern region.
