Weapon development is a huge field in science, and because of that, people haven’t held back on their advancements in the field. For better or for worse, weapons are all around us now, and they have really shaped history up until now. One of the biggest times for weapon advancements is in war, and there have been plenty in the past. First, I am going to talk about weapons from the Civil War of America. Arguably the biggest advancement that still held up, the Repeater. Repeaters are a type of gun that could fire multiple bullets before they had to reload, as opposed to other guns at the time that needed to be reloaded after one shot. The Repeater was so useful and revolutionary that many soldiers around the world still use them today. Another great Civil War invention was the Minié Ball. This was an advancement made by French army officer Claude Minié, and served as a more efficient alternative to regular bullets. Rather than having to use outside tools to reload, Miniés could just be slipped into the barrel of a gun, which was much faster than having to use small mallets and such. These were just 2 advancements from the Civil War, and while there were many more, I saw these 2 as the most revolutionary. Weapons weren’t the only things that boomed in the Civil War, there was also a plethora of new travel methods. Given that slaves wanted to run from their owners without being detected, there was an underground railroad that was used for people on the run to disappear. This was one of the most popular routes of transportation for slaves to escape to somewhere safer, but I still don’t see it as the most revolutionary transportation method in the Civil War. To me, I would say that it was the ABOVE ground railroad. Some of the earliest complete railroads in the country were established during the Civil War, and many of these tracks still lay today. While some of these railways may soon become obsolete due to the massive success of bullet trains in other countries, they have still been around for hundreds of years. I’ve been talking a lot about land methods of transport, but there were several sea methods that were coming together quite nicely during the Civil War. One of the biggest examples is Submarines. There were many sailors out at sea during the Civil War exploring the world, and there was one specific type of submarine that most would fear coming across: the “Iron-Clad”. They would prowl on the East Coast preventing any major imports or exports from Confederate powers.

Agent Orange was a herbicide made to kill enemy soldiers with just a single dose and was widely used by Americans in the Vietnam War. It was used to kill thousands (many speculate millions) in the Vietnam War and was eventually outlawed not just in the US, but by the United Nations. This was a weapon seemingly too powerful to give to man. The world had finally realized that life wasn’t theirs to take, but some people obviously haven’t learned their lesson, otherwise there would be less violence today. Though Agent Orange was a new low for America, the weapon has thankfully never been used (or documented after use, at least) again, and hopefully won’t be ever
