During the American Civil War, soldiers experienced many different problems. The lack of resources available, made it very difficult for soldiers to only do their job, but to also survive. One resource in particular that was lacking, was proper medical supplies, in order to keep soldiers healthy. The armies of both the north and south were constantly being plagued with certain diseases. Walt Whitman, who served as a Civil War nurse, said “the war business is about nine hundred and ninety nine parts diarrhea to one part glory” (McNeill).
